APBA Games is pleased to announce the release of its reissue of the 1955 Baseball season card set.
“NEXT YEAR IS NOW”
For what seemed to them forever, Brooklyn fans had swallowed disappointment after disappointment with the brave cry “Wait till Next Year!” In 1955, “next year” finally arrived. The long-suffering Bums, with their customary offensive powerhouse featuring Duke Snider (.309, 42 HR, 136 RBI), Roy Campanella (.318, 32, 107), Gil Hodges (.289, 27, 102) and Carl Furillo (.314, 26, 95) ran away with the Senior Circuit pennant and managed at last to top the Bronx Bombers in a hard-fought seven game series. Snider ripped 4 homers, but Johnny Podres, who won two games including a seventh game shutout, is remembered as the hero.
Philadelphia’s Richie Ashburn (.338) was the NL batting champion, and teammate Robin Roberts (23-14) was the league’s top winner. But the year’s most spectacular individual performance belonged to Willie Mays, who hit .319 with 51 HR and 127 RBI. Mays also led the circuit in triples with 13, stole 24 bases and scored 123 runs.
New York had to fight off strong aggregations from Cleveland and Chicago to reach the Fall Classic. Mickey Mantle paced New York at bat (.306 BA, 37, 99). Clutch-hitting Yogi Berra had a .272 BA, 27 HR and 102 RBI. Whitey Ford was the mound ace with an 18-7 record.
Rookie Herb Score (16-10) broke in with a bang for Cleveland, striking out 245 batters in 227 innings of work. Billy Pierce (15-10) boasted a sparkling 1.97 ERA for the Pale Hose. Young Al Kaline (.340, 27, 102) led the league in hitting, but aging Ted Williams (.356, 28, 83) might have beaten him if he’d gotten enough plate appearances.
The 1955 APBA card set includes 400 players. There are 25 carded players for each of the 16 teams that season along with team envelopes and a lineup sheet.
