One of my better bargain finds happened today, but it just feels wrong. This was still stuck in an old ball/card display, among several other displays that held signed balls at one time. The balls were pulled out to be sold separate and the displays with cards were tossed into a large bargain bin that sits outside of the store. There bins are typically loaded with "scrap" low dollar items, tossed in for kids after a collection is purchased and sorted. This owner likes to offer great deals at lower prices to move his inventory, rather than sitting on it for higher prices, and he goes through things very broadly and quickly at times. Just last week I nabbed (4) 1994 Drew Bledsoe Starting Line-Ups (among 15 or so other quality 1990-1995 pieces) all at $2 each from a huge collection of SLUs he just picked up! This was once one of the hottest pieces out there.

I find lots of neat goodies in there though from time to time and timing is the real key. Everything is one flat price, $1.00. Some other great finds were a Dodgers yearbook that had several autographs in it, including Mike Piazza, the insert version of the Frank Thomas screenplay cards originally sold in those round movie can like tins and the International Publication stickers book/set of 700 some odd stickers that most people find and part out.

There were several other star player cards in displays, but only this one had a signed card as well! I'm pretty sure this was a mistake or oversight. I know the owner pretty well and will talk to him about the find. He has been great to me and I owe it to him. However, it brings up a good question...When a seller offers something at their chosen price and it was available to anyone who came upon it, what moral or legal obligation does the buyer have to inform the seller of what is most certainly a mistake?

Wow! That is amazing! Being a friend I would definitely talk to him. On the other side, I am the type that goes back to a store after reviewing the receipt if they under charge. If the seller offers it at a given price knowingly is another story. Right or wrong is up to the individual's ability to sleep at night over it I guess. Curious to see how this works out.

I like to take advantage of a seller not being as knowledgeable as me or just being lazy/time-saving and pricing everything at a dollar without looking it up, but clearly something like a Willie Mays autograph for $1 was a major mistake. I wouldn't feel ethically right at all just showing a stack of 20 items and handing over $20 with that card in there.

For some reason if I went to a garage sale and an old granny had a shoebox full of 1952 Topps for $5 I would snap it up instantly with no ethical dilemma. Not sure what the difference is there...I guess that the shop owner clearly did not mean to put that particular card in a $1 bin and the granny clearly did mean to price the hypothetical '52's at $5.
