Robert, I just wanted to say that I wish you the best. I will say don't do it, but that is a personal decision. You are a big contributor to The Bench and your presence will be missed. Dave
I second this, the hobby gets frustrating at times, especially now with how many people have recently joined the hobby, or long time collectors who have let the new prices and greed destroy friendships and shown their true colors.
I have left the hobby many times after a bad transaction, but always find myself coming back. I have decided to stop with the over reaction, and find those parts of the hobby that I enjoy and to stop worrying about the value of the cards. I have found that once I started doing this, the greedy people stopped bothering me, I stopped making bad transactions, and now have a PC I love. A very small PC, that most would say has little value, but I enjoy it immensely. Sad to see you go, but you know what is best for you. Just know you will be welcome back when and if you decide to come back, don’t rule it out.
I agree with everyone who says your presence (or lack thereof) will definitely be noticed around here if you retire from the hobby, as you put it.
I've really started doing the same thing here lately. I've really started to focus in on my Tony Parker collection again, and I've really been enjoying looking at all the ones I'm missing, trying to decide which ones are good deals, and just knocking at least 1 per week off my list.
Robert - I wish you the best, but my suggestion is do what you need to do, take some time away from this hobby but if you find yourself missing the hobby part come back when ready. I maybe doing the same in the near future because I can’t buy new Topps cards anywhere around me anymore for reasonable retail prices.
Thank you everybody for the kind words and suggestions....but without going into the reasons and just the recent interactions of couple people here (whom I've been trading with for the past 15 years here on THE BENCH without ever having a problem). The last part of the narrative would be:
So for these reasons I absolutely DO NOT enjoy this part of the "hobby" anymore. It has become stressful and I eliminate stress from my life as I have no need for it. I've learned over the years that once things start going bad it ends up getting worse and I have to depend on myself to get out of it.
So I'm going to sell off about 95% of my collection...Just going to keep building just two sets, 1959 Topps (which was my dads from when he was a kid, it already had the Mantle) and my 1970 Topps (the year I was born). But I'm going to do it the old fashioned way and that is to go out to card shows and interact with people in that manner.
So now I need to get back to everybody with their replies... going to take care of cjay101 right now and go from there
Thanks again everyone
Robert
