I'm sure someone has asked this before, but I've never sent one and was wondering how do I get the postage for the SASE? do I get postage for the SASE and then put it in the envelope to send out?

When I send 8x10s TTM I use the self-service machine in the lobby. I weigh and buy postage for the initial package then purchase another stamp for the same amount and apply it to my SASE. I've also put three forever stamps on my SASE, that should be more than enough to cover return postage.
The first time I did it, I went up to the postal clerk and explained what I was doing with my envelopes in-hand. They weighed the SASE and told me the amount in postage. Then I bought a bunch of stamps in that amount.
