STOP Ruining Top Loaders!! Don't use tape!

LOL. I'm a little surprised people are that riled up about it. Oh well.

Nah, not "riled up". I think most of us are just having a good time with this and maybe even picked up a few pointers here. Some are even having fun with it as we have become aware that "jobs are on the line"!

I think MY point may have gotten lost. I ship cards the way I'd like to receive them, without tape across the top to hold cards in the top loader when it isn't necessary. I still have not seen a good reason to NOT follow that practice.

BTW, if someone is getting the idea of being a wise guy and loading the next trade with me with tape, I WILL give a "1" for packaging!!! LOL!!!

The majority of the taped top loaders that I get are used to sandwich lots in team bags which have to be taped. I have no problem with people doing this because it's just more protection for the cards.

Your method is great for a couple cards in top loaders, but what's your method for a lot in a team bag?

I try to do the same as you do with lots. Stack of cards between 2 "beat-up, tape goo filled" top loaders inside the baggie. Tape the baggie closed. I will also put the lot between 2 top loaders (cards in baggie) and put 4 pieces of tape sandwiching the cards between so they do not get damaged.

What started all this? Last week someone sent me a card in a toploader that had left over tape on the top edge. He did not tape the holder with NEW tape. I went to "knock" the card out of the top loader and a small edge of the left-over tape got stuck to the front of the card. I carefully pulled the card from the tape and no damage was done...thankfully. I should not have to go through this. If you don't use the tape, nothing like this will happen. There is absolutely NO NEED to use tape at all when closing a couple cards in a top loader when you turn the penny sleeve upside down. ABSOLUTELY NO NEED!!!!!!!!!!!

Im not a fan of using tape either. I place the cards between top loaders then wrap in a beckett magazine page then sticker it closed. I place the cards i recieve in new penny sleeves and top loaders if not up to my standard.

I forgot who it was but someone always used masking tape around the whole stack of top loaders several times and you ended up using a chain saw to break through.

I am guilty of using tape when mailing, mostly just to protect myself and the card from falling out.

However, I try to use masking tape that comes off easily, and/or fold the ends of the tape so it forms a tab to peel off easily.

Also, I like to use the written on/yellowed cases as cases to cards I am selling, to be as green as possible, but I do use new toploaders on every card whether it's selling or PC.

What I've seen too many times is that a card is placed into a toploader inside a penny sleeve and when I open up the envelope (bubble or PWE) the card is half out of the toploader in the "ready to be damaged" state. I prefer to tape the toploader shut so that the card has no chance of sliding out and I also tape the toploader to a piece of paper if shipping in a PWE. That lessens the chance of the toploader being lost should the PWE be accidentally torn open by machine or man.

When shipping a small stack of cards, I put them in a team bag and sandwhich them between toploaders, with plenty of tape used to secure them. I use regular tape, not shipping tape, to secure them.
Overall, I have never heard any complaints about using too much tape, so I think I've done good so far. :)

Better safe than sorry, basically.

i use old toploads and tape or team bag between toploads.

call me lazy, but i wouldn't want to recieve cards (if it's only 1 or 2, i could deal with that) tipped upside down in a toploader. when i get them, i'll have to turn them right side up. i guess i'm just quirky as to how i put my cards in the penny sleeves and toploaders, lol

the only thing i really HATE (it's been mentioned already) is when you have to get the jaws of life to peel thru, cut thru etc... a package of cards. scotch tape or masking tape is sufficient when packing a stack of cards. no need to use packing tape or duct tape.

p.s. this was some very interesting and entertaining reading, lol.

I wouldn't put the card upside down in a toploader for fear that it would slip out of the sleeve and end up falling into the toploader while putting the card in the toploader which could ding the corner(s). Also, I could see it being a pain trying to get it back out as there won't be abything to grab on to and the card could slip out of the sleeve that way as well.

I put a card in a team soft sleeve, top loader, then a team bag. But even if there is tape on the top loader, who cares? If you want a clean top loader just go buy some or use goo gone to remove the tape residue.

I'm a tape person, but always use very little of it - no more than 1/4" worth in length. Note: The idea of it is to keep the card from sliding out so it really doesn't matter what amount you use just as long as it covers the top.

No tape = jacked up card TOO often to count.

I rather feel "ugh tape again" vs "OMG the card slipped out".

Cost of materials (in this agrument - tape) is way less than the cost of SAFETY (you know safety 1st, right?!?), a damaged card (and replacement) AND unhappy/angry customer/trader (long term cost).

Lastly, I haven't bought tape for topladers in years since I RECYCLE used tape as well (from the crazy people that over tape). You should see my printer and computer sides - tape everywhere!!!!

Since I get team bags and stiff white (blank or ad) cards often, I reuse them...I'd put the top loader into a team bag, fold/wrap the excess of the team bag around & tape-seal it and tape the team-bagged top loader to a stiff card for extra reinforcement. No complaints from buyers/traders. I always fold tape at the end for easy peeling.

I may be in the minority, but why are you complaining about tape? As long as what you are getting arrives safely and not damaged, I see no reason to complain about tape on a toploader. We are trading for cards, not toploaders. :)

I have recently converted to team bags. I hate the residue of tape. But if they come full of tape I use them to ship a team bag full of cards sandwiched between 2 TAPIES. Also I love the using the blanks idea.

Read post #43...the whole point is, if you don't need it...why use it? (tape)
Put a common in a penny sleeve, turn it in a top loader upside down like in the first post. Shake the H.E. double hockey sticks out of it and tell me if it comes flying out or sticks out. If done correctly, NO WAY! So if you can keep top loaders clean, there would be no need to even take the card out of the top loader to put in your personal collection.
Don't need it, don't use it!

I did it 3 times and it flew out all 3 times.

To me if you are going to use tape on a top loader, use masting or painters tape, less residue and easyer to clean from the top loader too.thats my 2 cents worth.

The card obviously can not fly out since it is being blocked by the bottom of the top loader. If your sleeve flew out, then your loader is too wide. If you do it right, it CANNOT fly out.
If you load the penny sleeve into the top loader the "normal" way, it (the card, not the sleeve) will fly out every time.

Just got some cards tapped together by ...scott tape in a plastic case..not in one place...but three spots that I can see..going crazy trying to get the scott tape off without damaging the cards.....got the case party open! Best regards, David

For all the "Pro Tape" posters in this thread, please use Masking or Painters tape. Pretty, pretty please :).
