For a few years now I've been toying with the idea of collecting the 33 and 34 goudey sets. Of coarse this will be a long term project, and there are a handful of high value cards that will make the set financially impossible to complete.

Now my big question is do i go raw or graded. There are tons of fakes and reprints so I'm leaning towards the graded. Not to concerned about the grade itself a PSA 1 will be fine and most graded commons sell for under $20.

And to date I only have 1 card from each set (both Yankees) ....1933 Dickey and 1934 Chapman

Let the fun begin.

Personally I would do graded where possible.. some of the 3-4-5s are not too bad and look better than thier grades

I'm working on the 35 goudey set, graded psa 4 or 5. I went with graded purely because of the reprint/fakes issue. Good luck.

Go graded. Too many fakes in the market. Buddy of mine ended up with a handful of fakes. Expensive mistake.

Thanks guys, I think I will stick with graded and just wait for the right price.

I agree with everyone else. I'd say graded is the way to go. Best of luck with the set. Make sure you show some scans when you get some new pick-ups! I love looking at the "old stuff"!

Thanks

I like graded as well but you will definitely need to figure out storage requirements. The think plastic does take up some space when you are considering the amount of cards in both sets.

I'm not saying they don't exist, but I have never seen a reprint card that came anywhere close to looking/feeling like an original goudey. I suppose that someone could have come up with something much more authentic, but I haven't gone after those cards in years, unless I find one that has been signed. Buying on the internet is more risky though, of course, because you can't see them.

Both sets will cost you good, but the 34 would be easier to finish on a budget simply because it is less than half the size of the 33 set, there are no Ruth cards (the 33 set has 4), not to mention the Wagner-like Lajoie card that is considered a 33, yet looks like a 34.

The 34s have the 24 high number series, which will be harder to find cheaply and Gehrig still. #1s are always at a premium and the 34 set used a popular HOF, Jimmie Foxx, plus there is a Hank Greenburg rookie. Beyond that, it's smooth sailing;) !! Neither will be an easy set on a budget, that is for sure, but the hunt can be exciting. Good Luck!

They are great looking cards. I probably have 2 dozen 33s and maybe a dozen 34s including a couple of the key 34 cards which are "beaters" and a handful of signed cards as well, but only one 34 scanned...
