Think you have a nice autograph collection?

I liked looking at those because half of those people are deceased and you just can't get autos like that anymore...He has an amazing collection.

Very nice collection, but most of the players featured were readily available in the recent past or even currently. Having the money to buy or travel to get these in person can by a very nice collection (Russell, Marshall, Koufax, etc). I would have been more impressed if the condition of so many were not so rough!

I stopped as the FB cards started, but I saw very few super tough autos over all, especially if he has been collecting for a while. It wasn't that long ago that you could even find reasonably priced Satchell Paige or Mickey Mantle. Many of the cards are valuable in their own right, which is what I like best about the collection on a whole (being a vintage auto collector myself).

There are auto collectors out there who can certainly rival his collection that reach back much further.

It would take hours to look at them all! WOW!

Best collection I've ever seen! A history lesson I'll show my 9 year old later!

His collection doesn't go back as far as some, as I know you have a number of tougher autos from BB players who played in the 10s-30s that died well before the burst of auto collecting. Pretty much many of the bigger names that died in the early 70s or before now are a lot tougher to get at a decent price. However, there is a difference between having a signed 3x5 card and a signed RC.

The impressive part for me is the cards he has signed, not just the autos themselves. Anyone can have a Spahn auto, but having it on his RC makes it that much better. That Bill Russell RC was one of the better cards that I saw for sure. Aaron RC, Mantle RC, Mays RC...those are much more impressive than the autos themselves!

I guess ill need to start adding more pics to my site then?
I have a ton noone has ever seen yet :)
more to follow

Mr Mopar while i agree that a signed rookie is nice to me an auto is an auto. Ill take my boys and girls club newsletter that bob cousy is man of the year signed by cousy with bob cousys address label on it over almost anything else of his as I truly have a 1 of 1 auto. i dont see where the cost justifys the auto in most cases

the cards themselves are fantastic and that as you say may be the best part but how many have a "twink" twining in thier collection? :)

ok howard "twink" twining often mentioned with "moonlight" graham. here are his stats
first game 7/9/1916 - last game 7/9/1916

Such is the joy of collecting, as each person sets their own guidelines. This is one reason why I rarely participate in these contests to compare collections and collectibles. My collection is suited to my taste, not anyone else's.

I have most of those autographs myself, and many others he doesn't show, but because I do collect autographs on vintage cards myself, I tend to think that his collection has some standout pieces that I only wish I had. On the other end, I probably have some items he doesn't.

Like your obscure example, I also chase the lesser known, but there has to be a specific reason for me. A guy who played one game is not enough to care, but maybe if that game was with the Dodgers, or he did something significant, then I would try to get it. I started collecting autographs of players who were on the all star rosters. Many were easy, some are very hard...money being the barrier to my success.

For example, many would ask "Who?" if I shared that I finally grabbed up a Cy Blanton autograph. He was a 2 time AS in the mid 30s to early 40s. He died in 1945 at the young age of 37, reportedly due to his fondness and abuse of alcohol. Another I am happy about is Jimmy Wilson on a 1935 Diamond Star card. He was also a 2 time AS from the early 20s to 1940. He also died relatively young, age 46, in 1947. Finding the lesser known players who died this long ago is a challenge in itself, although not as exciting to most as a similar era HOFer. On that note...I didn't see an Arky Vaughan in his collection though. Vaughn was a HOFer who drown in a boating accident in 1952 at the age of 40.

I'm with you 100%, Mr.M.

I collect autographed cards of players from Puerto Rico. I'm down to 20 or so players (out of a total of about 300) that I need to complete my collection. The problem is, these players I'm missing either don't have cards made (because of the short MLB careers they had) or else they are deceased. Some of these players have 8x10 autographed pictures for sale on EBAY, but I want to get an autographed card, not an 8x10. So, I set my guidelines and I'm going for it the best I can.........and it is very satisfying when I finally land someone for whom I've been searching for a looooong time.

Who are you still missing? I enjoy following these types of collections. I ended up reading about another ethnic collector who was getting all of the players born in Mexico.

I can't focus down enough to really knock out any one theme, as I like HOFers, All Stars, Dodgers, Topps All-Rookies, generally nice vintage cards, etc. I will take just about any player, any sport, but baseball is my primary focus, so those other sports have suffered because of it.

Here is a smattering of parts of my collection. Many of these were just scanned at the time I got them or maybe there was a story behind some of them (some just don't fit in with the others, for that reason). I have much more not shown but everything shown is mine with one exception...the 1971 Munson, which I have there as reference.
