Bobby Winkles 2/2 1 week (1973 & 1974 Topps)

A heck of a baseball man, at the major league level Winkles had to work with clubs that had little offense. For example, his first year at the helm with the Angels, in 1973, Winkles had two 20-game winners in Nolan Ryan and Bill Singer, with Clyde Wright and Rudy May forming the rest of the rotation. Not a bad rotation, at all. However, outside of Frank Robinson (30 HRs and 97 RBI) and Bob Oliver (who hit 19 HR's and had 89 RBI in a full time utlity role) the Angles had only one other player who had more than 36 RBI (Vada Pinson with 57). When the teams leading hitter, Bobby Valentine literally broke his leg in 2's, 3's, and 4's in May '73, the team's offense went dramatically south. Winkles was replaced by Dick Williams midway through the '74 season. I often wondered what Winkles could have done with that team with just a bit more offense.
