He spent several seasons either on the bench or shuffling back and forth from the minors to Pittsburgh, but he did show he had major league pop in that bat. He even smashed three home runs in one game in 1958, for example, yet still failed to get regular playing time. He was left unprotected in the expansion draft in 1961, and the Colt 45's quickly snatched him up. Mejias quickly made his prescence known in the middle of the Colt 45's line up, belting two home runs on opening day 1962, and leading the Houston club in every major offensive category, except stolen bases, that inaugural season. The Red Sox thouoght so highly of him the literally traded away the American League's leading hitter for him after the '62 season.
