Yeah, Tony Gwynn seems like a decent guy. He's teaching youngsters and his kid is in the majors...I hope he is okay.

if and when did you do catch him in person, make sure you you say "Mr. Gwynn, will you please sign my item." If you don't say "please", no matter how polite you may otherwise be, he will give you hard-time.
I asked him "Mr. Gwynn, would you mind signing my card?" last year before a Western Carolina v. San Diego State game and he kinda acted like a dick about it. One of his players came up to me and told me to ask again and say "please" ----- it is a souring experience to have a weird interaction with a guy that you always looked up to as a little kid.

Well, I understand where you're coming from, but you also have to be empathetic here. Keep in mind he's been in the public spotlight for some 29 years now. When you ask for an autograph he doesn't have to say yes. Just like TTM, it's a request. As a common courtesy it's always a good idea to say "please" and "thank you." Every player has their own personal set of rules. Josh Hamilton, for example, will not sign on Sundays or his day off. Whenever you venture into the IP arena you're coming face to face with these individuals. You have to remember they're people, too. Those two things: "please" and "thank you" can really help you out along the way.

This is an interesting topic...perhaps I should make a new thread. I haven't been doing IP or TTM for long. All of my TTM letters are very clearly personal to the player. (Part of the fun of the hobby for me is researching stuff.) And yes, I say "please" at the bottom of the letter.

As for IP, I do say please, but it feels awkward for me to refer to a player as "Mr. So-and-so," seeing as how they could be ten years younger than me. I still do it, and I still ask, "Would you please sign for me?" I make sure I don't look like a dealer and I make sure I'm organized and ready to go. But I wonder if the player thinks I'm a weirdo for calling them "mister."

Oh, and I should note that Tony Gwynn is much older than I am and if I met him, it would probably be very clear that I am in awe of his accomplishments on the diamond and off.
