what happened to mark prior? I think due to arm issues he is out of baseball? wasnt he suppose to be the next roger clemens/nolan ryan?

Sure, just like Clint Hurdle was supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle. He was simply another prospect that didn't live up to unrealistic expectations, like Mark Fidrych, Joe Charboneau, Pat Listach, Shawn Abner, Ryan Leaf, Brien Taylor, Sam Bowie, etc., etc.

He tried to make a comeback last year but never made it out of the minors. I am not sure if he was cut or is still floating around. Either way he did have a great couple of seasons before his arm troubles. Just another reason I am not a prospector in rookie pitchers. Strasburg may be the exception to a guy who was hurt and rebounds to have a decent long-term career.

Dewayne

i agree with you Dewayne. pitchers are just too risky, like brien taylor, ben mcdonald, todd van poppel, prior and others, they were all suppose to be the next nolan ryan and never panned out.

Yeah, he was signed to a minor league deal with the Yankees last year but never made it up to the Bigs. He has now faded into the ivy wall of Wrigley Field and is now waiting for his buddy Kerry Wood to come by and pull him out.

Mark Prior and Jake Peavy pitched against each other in a AA game (in Mobile, AL) the year both were called up. Only game I have skipped work to see. Both pitched good games, but Prior was better - he also almost hit a home run in the game. Really sorry that this arm issues derailed his career.

Todd

pitchers are just too risky

Just too risky for what? You can't play the game without pitchers.

The truth of the matter is that you are extremely talented just to be drafted, even more so to make it to the show, and in the top 0.5% of your profession if you to make the show. This is why I get so bothered by people scoffing at pulling 'junk', those card don't have much monetary value but those ARE cards of extremely talented men and should be appreciated more.

To answer your original question, it's nearly impossible to live up to the billing of 'the next _____ _______', so we are left wondering what might have been, when the truth is that Mark Prior was a hell of a pitcher.

As compared to Joe Charboneau, Ron Kittle, Kevin Maas, Hensley Muelens, Marquis Grissom, Delino DeShields, Mike Greenwell, Raul Mondesi, Pat Listach, Sam Horn, Shawn Abner,Jose Cruz Jr, etc etc. ? Most prospects in general don't live up to the comparisons. Even if they have initial success, maintaining that is a tall order. As Ed pointed out, anyone who makes the majors for even a day has already beaten some pretty big odds and Prior won 18 games one year, made an all star team, had a 245 strikeout season, was top 3 in Cy Young voting. When you do all that by age 22 that's a tough act to follow up, not many in the game put up those kind of numbers for any length of time on a regular basis.

PS, he was still in the Red Sox system earlier this year, I remember hearing about him getting released in July or August

ed, when i said risky, i meant risky as a card investment. i do respect professional baseball players as many of my friends have played in the big leagues.
