When 2013 Topps came out I made retail purchases of retail packs, rack packs, hanger boxes and blasters from both Target and Walmart. I've accumulated what appears to be three variations on the Chasing History singles... non-holofoil, gold holofoil and silver holofoil and I paid no attention to which ones came from where.
Beckett seems to recognizes these three versions (here are how they list the Thome singles)...
2013 Topps Chasing History #CH39 Jim Thome $0.75
2013 Topps Chasing History Holofoil #CH39 Jim Thome $1.50
2013 Topps Chasing History Holofoil Gold #CH39 Jim Thome $2.00
However, baseballcardpedia references a fourth version...
Silver non-foil (Hobby packs)
Silver foil (retail packs)
Gold foil (Hanger boxes)
Holographic Foil (retail rack packs)

To add to the confusion, sportlots is indicating a "white foil" version!
I've only purchased retail so I'm not sure if the fourth version is from hobby. Or, perhaps Walmart, Target and Toys R Us add to the variation pool. Does anyone out there know if there is a fourth or fifth version that Beckett isn't recognizing yet?
From what I've seen on Ebay and such, I'm concluding that the retail and hobby standard packs are producing the same non-holofoil version, sportslots just used an alternate name for "silver", and that there are truly three versions out there as Beckett has described... base (non-holofoil), gold holofoil, silver holofoil
To solve all the confusion, the card companies would just need to number their variations (even the base variations) with an alternate number... 1A, 1B, CH39A, CH39B, CH39C, etc. But, that would make too much sense!
Appreciate anyone's input.
Cheers,
Michael
