Does anyone know what makes the card the "Gold" variation? Is it a gold background or a gold name? I have a Dawson that has what appears to be a gold background, but it has a silver name. I didn't buy any packs so I don't have anything to compare it to. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Craig

If I remember correctly I believe there is the letter g just before the number.

Rich - I believe that was true with 1997 Ultra. I don't know about the 1996 Flair though. The card I have doesn't have a "G" anyway. Anyone else have a take?

Thanks
Craig

according to the beckett bb cards price guide (the big one)
1996 flair
"Gold and silver etched foil front variations exist for all cards. These color variations were printed in similar quantities and are valued equally"

hope that helps

So it sounds like it's the front of the card and not the name that matters. Now I just need to find the regular since it looks like I already have the gold!

Thanks!

Craig,
For a while, I didn't even realize there were variations. But after comparing the one I have to Brad's, the difference is in the fonts - the word Flair and the name. I'll get scans up in a bit...

Here are the scans...

Tai - Thanks for the scans! So the one I have is the regular then? The letter in Flair and the name are actually in gold, correct?

Thanks!
Craig

It does look like yours is the regular. Yes, the lettering in Flair and the name would be gold.

Now I need to find the regular one. It seems to be more difficult to find.

Tai - PM sent. I actually just went a head and bought the Dawson from Burbank. Only person who has it listed between Beckett and eBay. I sent you a link to the Ryno's on Beckett.

Thanks
Craig

im looking at carlos baerga as i type this
if my memory still works the regular one will have a silver background and gold letters on the name and logo(on right)
and the golds will have silver letters and logo (on Left)
backside is the same so no help there to tell a difference
confused yet ?

So the gold has the silver letters? Now I'm confused. It looks like I may need the gold then...

yes the golds will have the silver letters if you can put the same player side by side you can easly tell which is which
also becketts info is not 100% right as far as production goes
gold version was inserted 1 per pack like ultra gold medallions
and if i remember right flair packs contained 5 cards per pack so 1 in 5 would be gold
I guess that is close enough for beckett

1996 Flair

If you havn't got the answer yet, here is a scan of the two versions;
The gold has gold lettering for 1996 Flair and players name, and silver has silver lettering both places.
Scan10004.jpg

There were 7 cards per pack, 4 silver and 3 golds unless there was an
insert, then there was 4 silver and 2 golds, so the golds are slightly rarer than the silver. I ripped a bunch of this and have complete sets of each.

Does anyone know if this stands true on the checklists as well?

Thanks
Craig

*I have checklist #398 that is gold on the front with "1996 Flair Checklist" in silver. The back is black. So that means I need to look for a silver front with gold lettering?
