1980 Topps Pirates Future Stars.
Talk about random. Here is one for you. Back before the pandemic hit and I still worked at the casino, we held a party for a group that was circulated around the department at the Boyland Doctorate Celebration. It was a huge deal and took over our entire event space on the second floor and prevented any of us taking shortcuts through the back areas. The party lasted until the wee hours of the morning and as they were taking stuff down an assistant shift manager and myself were looking at a couple items once we were allowed back in that area. (All guests were cleared out) on one of the banners were a list of all of his accomplishments and one included a Pittsburgh Pirates logo. I asked on of the catering ladies what was up with the Pirates logo and she mentioned that Mr Boyland had played for Pittsburgh. We went into our office and Googled it. Dorian Boyland, or Doe as he went by currently did indeed play for the Pirates. The problem was he was blocked at all positions in the majors. At first base there was someone named Stargell. In Right Dave Parker, in left Bill Robinson. He played college ball at UW-Oshkosh with Brewers long time second baseman Jim Gantner. His one major league claim to fame was he struck our whole sitting on the bench. In his first MLB at he was removed with two strikes, the Mets switched pitchers and Chuck Tamner pulled Boyland and replaced him with Rennie Stinnett, who promptly struck out. He retired I'm 1982 and opened an nu.ber of successful auto dealerships across the country. I remember hearing of the Boyland Automotive Group whole first living in Milwaukee. Kind of a cool little story to connect to a card I've had as long as I've collected.
