1984 Topps Encased?

Anyone know the story behind these? (Compare the hats on both cards and the "encased" is blank backed)

Hey Craig! I've got one or two of the Cubs encased versions. Not all of the encased are blank backed, mine have the normal back. I don't think the real story behind them has ever been nailed down, but obviously Topps made at least some sheets where the photo was a little different (encased).

I did not know that! I wonder if there are variations for each card?

Did these make it into packs, or were they just another back-door type thing?

pretty wicked. I thought it was a first print from a proof but looked
around and saw what they look like. Maybe thats a Promo?

I must be mistaken about mine having a normal back (I don't have it right in front of me right now), most everything written about them say they are all blank backed.
