So I bought a couple blasters of Gypsy Queen because who can resist? I think I am slightly peeved by the alternate photo SPs. If I hadn't figured out about them, how would I know to look for them? And if I didn't have decent google-fu I wouldn't be able to tell which is which.

Are these parallels annoying? Should we like them? (And if anyone has the Cabrera variation, I have a few to trade. =) )

A practice that I have adopted is to search for the set variations when a new set is introduced. There are enough dealers out there that break open the product before it hits the shelves officially, that they usually have a checklist available immediately.

I knew about the the Gypsy Queen variations by searching for "2012 gypsy queen variations" today. The first link shown is very informative.

It adds a challenge to the set, it makes you stop and look at the cards instead of just reading the number on the back, gives you the chance to get a little extra value for your purchase, I like the variations/SP's

You know what...this is an awesome point. I have often thought that I should spend more time looking at the photos and reading the cards, even for cards I don't plan on keeping. I've thought about forcing myself to sit down with a different set each week just to take a good look at them. (To read them like a book.)

I bought a couple packs of Gypsy Queen hobby today and I am actually quite pleased to check for SPs and sort them and to look at the beautiful photos for the retired players. Thanks!

No problem. I enjoy them myself because of the added challenge. I almost quit the hobby when I was 16/17. In the 1986-91 years I had a summer job, it was 40+ hours a week, with my weekends free. I didn't care about getting a car, I didn't need to see every movie that came out, wasn't into a lot of music, but I was into baseball cards. even at the $4-$5 I was getting, that was $160-200 a week. I could go to a show, buy 2 boxes of 1988 Topps, and I was done with the set, repeat with Fleer, Donruss, and then Score. If I didn't have the set, I had enough doubles to trade for what I needed. I knew the inserts were a losing battle trying to build by the box, so I could pretty much have sets completed in a couple days. It was the most boring couple of summers I had. I remember to keep myself interested, I'd read the card backs, look at the pictures, try to remember what got me into the cards in the first place.

Thought I would add this link.... has checklists for base sp's and mini's w/ links to photo galleries of both next to their reg card. Hope it helps.

Usually this is a very informative site I go to when checking my cards I busted out for SPs etc. I had a few SPs out of my 2 rack packs I bought from Walmart today and wouldnt have known either unless I checked the checklist. Although I am with David that they should label them 14sp or 14b or something.

At least with retail packs, the last 2 cards in the pack are always a Mini and an insert. In 4 of the packs I got, the last card was a base card...I checked all 4 and they were SP variations. So that's an easy way to spot them.
