It's been 3 days. I noticed they have AWS now in their url... I wonder if they're transitioning with the psacard purchase of their domain/licensing.

This is the notice I get.

We are down for maintenance

Starting at 7 pm CT on September 9, Beckett took our digital platforms (i.e., all Beckett websites and the Beckett mobile app) offline to make infrastructure enhancements.

What this means for our customers:

  • Effective immediately, we are not accepting any new submissions at Beckett.com (or other Beckett sites) until digital platforms are restored.
  • We will still accept in-person drop-off submissions for the shows we are attending, including the upcoming Dallas Card Show and the LA Card Show.
  • Existing orders Beckett has already received are not impacted; we will continue to process all in-house submissions.
We are working as quickly as possible through this process and will provide additional updates here.
Need help in the meantime? Contact [email protected].

Late this afternoon the "maintenance" notice was replaced by the login screen, but all attempts to login result in a time out message "server busy, try again after sometime."
Ransomware attack?
Another data breach?
Totally incompetent update failure?
Not a good look at all.

They’re rescheduled to open their lower tiers Sept 15th. I heard the site will be active Monday but who knows. Definitely more than maintenance.

Now that its been down for the most part of 5 days.... what happens with those subscription fees? Will we be credited that time? For example I bought a 14 day basketball price guide that I normally dont do. 1/3 of that now is being taken from me. Will they extend that?

If I were guessing, I would guess your 14 day pass might just get extended by the number of active days you have been denied. But as for us annual pay guide subscribers it'll be tough luck.

especially with how much they charge for a subscription

Here's my email to them a few days ago.

Hello,
Your website has been unavailable for three days, and I have a one-month subscription. Will you reimburse me in part for the days I'm unable to visit the website?

Warren Johnson

And this is their response.

Hello Warren,
Beckett’s Online Price Guide subscriptions are not refundable, so a partial reimbursement for the unavailable days is not available under the published policy [1]. Beckett’s digital platforms are currently offline during infrastructure enhancements, and no exact restoration time has been posted.
  1. Please keep an eye on the site for service restoration.
  2. If you do not want the subscription to renew, you can turn off auto-renewal in My Account → Subscriptions; the published steps differ slightly for credit-card and PayPal purchases [1].
Best regards,
Becky, your Beckett Support Assistant

Typical PSA cash grab… thanks for your money, and no refunds. Last time I renew for their stuff.

This outage has given me time to reflect on just how we trade cards and how we rely. at least I have become to rely, on a single source for my card valuations. As a trader, first and foremost, I have allowed this single source provided an impartial judge to give a pathway to trade with confidence no party is taking advantage of another. I've also used Ebay advanced to review past sales of those cards which my single source deemed insufficient information to allow a pricing, but that has always seemed clunky, spotty and even a bit random. So I've almost exclusively stuck to this single source for trading valuations.
Now this single source has decided, or been forced, to deny service to its paid customers for an indeterminate length of time and without any proper notice or explanation. Maybe it'll be back up today and we'll all just act like nothing happened - but then again, maybe we will remember this and decide to move in another direction.
What would that direction be? Are there apps out there using AI to price (for sales I am sure, not these behind the curtain trading valuations that we've kind of thought of as double sales value) that would work for base card set building? Some require scanning the card I believe but others allow search through databases. This area is all new to me so anyone with knowledge or opinion on this please educate me.
Probably most of you reading this are going to think, poor calsp3 he's allowed his old retired brain to wander around in a dark forest of the unknown now that his card trading methods have been ripped away from him and he's adrift.
And probably right about that.
But I will say one thing is for sure and it's this - this past four, five days and counting long experience is changing how I see this hobby and it's not really for the good.
