So I recently purchase a Sheffield game used lot of over 90 unique that I didn't have to already add to my 200+ unique. Someone asked me if it takes away from the hunt buying out another Sheffield collectors collection. I don't think so at all. If anything it's more practical. I'm spending $3~$4 a game used plus 2.99 shipping on eBay. Yet I'm paying around $3 in the bulk lot per card and obviously shipping is combined so.

So player collectors: Does it take away from the 'hunt' buyer a huge lot of your player or purchasing another collectors collection or is it just more practical and you prefer to hop on the opportunity if it presents itself?

i have literally hundreds of player collections (beginning with any and everyone with any ties to my south carolina gamecocks in addition to quite a few other personal favorites)....the objective for me is to own AT LEAST one of every card possible and as many extras as i can afford for autographs , game used , low numbered items , or other items i just happen to like.....i LOVE finding bulk lots to help me fill gaps quickly and affordably (my best two would probably both be marcus robinson lots - the first one had 286 different cards with a BV of roughly $1600 plus 3-4 items too scarce to price that i got for $65 delivered then barely a month later i nabbed another great ebay deal when i landed a 40-card lot with a BV of roughly $700 for $11.59 dlvd).....for the most part i'd say with all the stuff out there theses days , it's almost impractical to NOT try to find bulk lots to speed up the process since almost any player of any significance is still going to have plenty rare/obscure (and often undocumented) material available to search for on a card by card basis

It's rare for me to find a lot priced in the range I am willing to spend. The number one reason is that it might have a card or two I need. If it is a good lot, it may have a dozen or so cards I would actually seek out in duplication. It's been a long time since I've seen a lot that i was crazy to grab.

If I had a chance to land a large collection at a reasonable price, i would jump on it immediately. There is some fun to the hunt, but in the end, I am not collecting for the hunt. it's for the prize at the end of the hunt.

I believe buying lots is part of the hunt. It's not always possible to trade for player cards due to scarcity, trade needs, or other factors, so sometimes you have to buy. Getting a large lot in a buy is just another method of putting together a nice collection.

It's one thing if you get all/most of your collection just from buying a big lot, but I know you have been collecting Sheffield for a while...you've "hunted" plenty, nothing wrong at all with finding a bunch you need at once in a lot.

Unfortunately, you can really only buy a couple of big lots before it stops being worth the effort. I've got one 3000 count box nearly full of extra Dave Winfields, and almost the same for Matt Williams. At the time, I got great deals on the lots, and they quickly added new cards to my collections, but now I'm stuck with enormous amounts of cards I can't move. The last 300+ card lot I bought of Dave Winfield gained me exactly 2 cards I needed, so that was the last time I did that. Everything I need now is either extremely hard to find, or moving into the high-end range and wouldn't be found in a typical lot for a price that would make it worth my time.

All that said, when you still have a ton of wants, it's a great way to expand the collection. I couldn't imagine restricting myself to a "hunt" of one card at a time. That just seems needlessly inefficient.

I have bought whole collections before and if it were a good enough deal I would do it again. Sometimes I have to do it for a card or two thinking I will resell the duplicates but that never happens.
