The Bench will venture into the ever popluar "Case Breaks"

I would like to first gather some opinions/preferences.

#1 do you prefer "Team" or "Hits"

#2 What Case would you be intrested in?

The way I will run the Case Break will be as follows.

#1 Decide which case to purchase
#2 Collect money from participants
#3 When all funds are accounted for case will be purchased
#4 Have a live DRAFT to decide Who gets what Team or what order you pick the case hits.
#5 Live Case Break
#6 distriubte cards to the winners.

CASE BREAKS WILL ONLY BE DONE BY THE MOD TEAM.

1. I would prefer cards of a team versus "hits".
2. a. 2011 Heritage baseball if it is a current issue.
b. 2008 Upper Deck Hero's if a really good deal could be had.

I've never been apart of one of these, how many people are able to get in and how much $$$ does it cost?

Sounds like fun,

Frank

Cost really depends on the Case purchased. As for how many people involved, if it's a team break and we do baseball then up to 30 people (1 for each team)

I just did a 2010 NT Break over on Blowout...I had the Giants and hoped to get something of Bradshaw...didn't get one single card...which sucked...so that was $60 down the drain with zero to show for it.

I think the "hit" breaks will keep a lot of people from being upset...I wasn't upset myself because i knew the risk and was ok with it...but there will be some who get bent out of shape over such a thing.

I think you can do hits and then have a slot for the base...mods should do the random.org part of it so it's on the up and up.

either that or a draft style break would be fine...the team breaks can just be brutal, especially on high end breaks.

I think 08 UD Heroes of Baseball would be a great starting point.

I used to do team breaks. And I would do it auction style, by letting teams bid on the teams. And yes, some teams didn't sell, but in the end, it always paid for the box, or if it came up short, it was close enough as I had the teams that didn't get bid on. But that didn't happen often. I pretty much started with a median of where I had to be per team, with shipping and such. Then, as certain teams went up higher, rather than pocketing it as profit, I used that money to bring the cost of teams that weren't getting bids down.
Other people use the whole random number selection, and then you get to pick teams. But for some, that is just too much to gamble and get stuck with a team they don't care about. So for me, the auction method worked well. And even though I didn't video tape/stream it, I never had one complaint. I guess everyone was pretty happy with what was coming out of the boxes.

If I was to do a "hits" break we would do a snake draft. Once all the "hits" are claimed then we would let people pick a team and they would get the inserts and base for that team. This way Pick #1 gets the best hit of his choice but will probably get the last team available.

I've never done a case break. Just curious ... how do you determine where the "hits" end and the team inserts/base starts? If the case break were Heritage, a lot of people would consider the SPs and chromes as hits because of their scarcity.

I suppose that so long as the rules were established ahead of time, everyone would know what they're dealing with.

Did a case break on another board...losted big time using the team idea...The Person having The Rays...won big time.....Longeria was the big hit back then. Like the lotto pick for the hits....and then for the rest would be team lotto. Best regards, David

I'd love to see some group breaks here...I used to host breaks myself...

The whole "Team" vs "Hit" debate really depends on each product. Some products are better for teams (i.e 2008 Heroes) and some are better with Hits (i.e. Historic Autographs Legends of the Hall). I would recommend remaining flexible depending on the product.

IMO the best group breaks are the ones that involve higher end products; Triple Threads, Tributes, Sterlings, etc. Products that set collectors like usually do not make good (exciting) group break products.

I've always been a skeptic to get into things like this, but I might be interested with it being hosted by the Bench Mod team. Pardon my lack of knowledge, but how do these things work? I have no idea what "hit" and "team" means. I'm guessing that you can either pick the team you want or pick the hits?

Is there a such thing as drafting a team, then you get ALL of the cards from that team - regardless of it is a "hit", base card, etc.?

By the way.......Topps Heritage and Gypsy Queen are the upcoming products I am interested in.

Thanks for any insight.

For all that don't know the terms.

If it's a "TEAM" break. We get 30 participants and a live draft takes place to see who ends up with what team. When the case is busted each participant gets all the cards for his assigned team. The only issue is when a dual card pops up and there are two players from different teams.

If it's a "HITS" break. Same as above 30 participants and a live draft takes place for "seeding". The hits would be decided on before hand depending on the product. For example (08 Heroes All the GU and AUTO's would be in the HITS pool). After the case is busted lucky #1 in the draft gets first choice and we go down the line until all the HITS are distributed. Then we would go in reverse order for the remaining base and inserts as team lots.

So let's say I was #1 in the draft I would get first dibs on the HITS but I would be last for the Team lot.

On a side note - I will be hosting the break but I will not participate in it. I don't want anyone thinking I'm cheating them. And everything will be done live.

Have done a few this year.

Some teams have like 3-4 card for the team.

What they do is usually dont put those spots in.

EX... instead of 30 teams you would do 25 and raise price per slot up to off-set the cost of the case.

Then at the end you can raffle off the non selected teams.

Heritage would be pretty good considering there is alot of diffrent teams with on card autos.

Or we could wait for Topps 2?

I dont see why you cant do BOTH styles (rotate) and see which one receives more interest and has less 'hassles' .... maybe try to gear one break team-wise that is a lower to middle end product that has most of the teams represented in the 'hits' ..... and do the 'hits' break on a middle to high end product where most/all of the hits will be focused on a handful of teams - I hope that made sense - either way, good luck, Erik

you do a random.org on the teams or hits. 1-30 put the names down than hit random so many times and what team/hit you get is what you get.

I know Topps Heritage is a favorite on many set collectors but how about this box? The discription is from CharmCitys web site.
