The Delmon Young odyssey continues with his trade to the Tigers, a perfect fit it would seem.

I was blown away by the fact that he finished 10th in the MVP race last year.

I follow his career, but I had no idea he had such a solid year last year so I checked his stats:

170 hits, 46 doubles, 21 HRs, 112 RBIs and a .298 average. Not bad, and seemingly under the radar.

Wondering if there are any intangibles that I'm also unaware of.

Poor guy will have to do ALOT more to negate slamming an umpire with a bat after a called 3rd strike.

I think Delmon is also a victim of "hype." When he was drafted first overall, his 2003 Bowman Chrome Draft Gold Refractors were selling in the $1500+ range (My longtime fellow Benchies will remember Mr. EB31:)). No way a player - not even Strasburg nor Bryce Harper - can ever live up to the hobby hype that is placed on them like that. The only player, and I mean ONLY player I have ever witnessed in my 24 years of collecting that has met that type of hobby hype and exceeded it for the rest of his career to date was Pujols. And realistically, he didn't have the same type of hype - he was crushing in Spring Training 2001 when hobbyists caught on. He didn't have a card until after he was playing in the big leagues.

Keep in mind - I am referring to HOBBY hype - not actual on-field production. Hopefully, Delmon is more of a late-bloomer like Paul Konerko was. Konerko started out as a top prospect that was dealt around a little before he found his groove. He has since become one of the White Sox nation's all-time fan favorites.
