Estate sale purchases

Yesterday I went to the estate auction of a former 90s coin/card shop owner and my town's former Police Chief. After the 10% buyer's premium and sales tax,I picked all these up for around the price of a hobby box of 2016 Topps Museum Collection. Spent an hour last night rescuing the cards from their slumber inside recessed screw-downs and snap-tites (remember those? lol).

First off was a box full of Griffeys. There were a lot of base,promo and sample cards,broders and cheaper inserts. Starting from worst to best,these are what was in the box:













Next up was a lil 3 card lot of Fooseball:



A few more nice baseball:



The last 3 cards are what made my day really. I've been a Mets fan for close to 35 years but 2 of the 3 here will go into my personal collection (one is smudged ) :

Very nice!!!! I was at the flea market this morning and picked up a bunch of 1972 Topps high numbers in exmt condition for 1.00 each. There are finds out there but you just have to really hunt for them.

WOW! Very, very nice pickups. The most impressive cards in my book are the 1969 Topps Ryan and the very much sought after 1982 Ripken Topps Traded (I mean, doesn't every 1982 Topps Traded want list have that card on it??). They might not be the most valuable of the cards that you acquired but those are the ones that immediately caught my eye.

I know I am in the minority on this but I have no idea why anyone would buy pricey new packs and boxes since nice cards are widely available extremely cheaply on the secondary market, Granted, cards like many of the ones that Bblair picked up rarely become available for a low price but there are plenty of good buys out there for collectors if they work a little at finding them.

Once again, congrats on a really great buy! I'm both impressed and jealous!!

Very nice find Brett - that Ryan, and probably the Mantle will be two of the toughest that I need for my 69 set.

Bryon - will double, nay triple, your purchase price in trade on those 72 hi numbers!!!!

Desert Shield. As a parallel collector I zeroed in on that, the Artist Proof, and the Museum Collection.

I've seen tons of threads like these in the past and this is a first for me. Still letting it soak in. The Ripken in it's original state when I bought it was funny because the card came with a COA stating that it was an authentic card in NM+ condition. Long before BGS,PSA and SGC.

Yeah they are. The AS card is nice but the back on his regular base has slight peeling on one corner

The Ripken in it's original state when I bought it was funny because the card came with a COA stating that it was an authentic card in NM+ condition. Long before BGS,PSA and SGC.




I had totally forgotten about the forgery problems of certain cards back then. There were a few non-vintage cards that were notorious for being counterfeited back in the late 80s and the Ripken Traded was one of them The most notorious card for forging was the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan RC, The Gretzky RC, some of the Star Company Jordans and believe it or not the 1984 Donruss Mattingly RC were some of the most forged cards back then. Even to this day some of those cards raise red flags with dealers when some one tries to sell one..........especially that 86-87 Fleer Jordan.

Between card forgeries and rampant tampering of wax boxes and packs in the 1980s it is somewhat remarkable that sports cards went through such a boom period in the late 1980s-early 1990s.

With all the heavyweight cards you picked up the Ripken Traded card's authenticity would not even been a concern for me. But the COA does not hurt, that is for sure!

Yeah, popped in a couple of days ago. My cards had been packed up since my move three years ago, but I've been able to organize the garage a little and stumbled upon my trade box.

That's awesome! I really like the '96 or '97 Jeter Topps auto........Tried picking that up years ago and never did........The Ryan auto is cool too! Nothing like those '90's inserts, eh?

Yeah there was a lot of counterfeited cards back then,also signed memorabilia which there were a bunch of at this auction but I avoided them. However there were a couple I regret not buying knowing their COAs were legit.
