A member told me about this set so I checked it out and ACCIDENTALLY bought it instead of just watching it... glad I did, though. Kinda cool.

I'm still not sure how these were distributed. The panels must have been an offer for money or box tops as they woud not fit into a cereal box. I know I bought 10 or 12 of these sets in a flea market in New Jersey in 1985 and even have the original sale price sticker with them...............showing I actually don't throw anything away! LMAO!!! The sticker said $3.50 a set and I know I did not pay anything near that for them. It was probably $15 or $20 for them all which is how I always liked to buy.
Did you notice that Harvey Martin and DuPree are switched? They put the wrong photo on each of them...
I had never noticed that before and neither has Trading card database! Good catch. The fact that Billy Joe DuPree is clearly wearing Harvey Martin's jersey number #79 is a dead giveaway. Good eye!
The face masks had me wondering...
Wow! You were paying attention to details! If you look at tight end David Hill's face mask it falls right between Martin and DuPree;'s style.
With hindsight being 20/20, the player seletion in this set seems odd but most of these guys were the biggest time players at that time. Injuries certainly curtailed many potential HOF careers in that groups.

Yeah before I got theese I had never heard of Nielsen or Senser!! Fun fact about the punter McInally though- he was the creator of the Starting Lineup Kenner figures.
I hope he sold in the mid 90's!!
oh yeah and he's also the only player to ever get a perfect Wonderlic score.
Is that truth??? If so that's just bonkers to think... how many players have taken that test? And he's the ONLY one to score perfect? Vimce Young should have hired him to be his tutor!

To illustrate how big most of these players were in 1982, I'll have to tell a story of a tragic decision I made in the early 80s. I was at a monthly card show in Syracuse in 1982 or 1983 and I came across a dealer who had a ton of assorted unopened packs for a nickel each in these plain card board boxes. He had 1980 Topps Football, an unknown hockey issue and 1980-81 Topps Basketball. Since I did not collect hockey at that time I eliminated that from my potential purchase. I have no idea what hockey packs they were so I won't claim they were 1979-80 Topps (aka the Wayne Gretzky RC set). I'm guessing they were most likely the 1981-82Topps set with all the regions but I'll never know for sure.
I'm a "how much for everything" guy when it comes to buying cards. I only wanted to "risk" buying one of these groups of packs so when I asked the dealer "how much for all of one of these?" he gave me a total that came to 2 1/2 cents per pack. Mulling it over, I figured there were a ton of Ottis Anderson RCs in the 80 Topps football and I hated the 80-81 Topps basketball panels despite the Bird and Magic RCs. Sooooo, genius that I am, chose the1980 Topps football where my brothers and I filled my dad's station wagon with boxes and boxes and boxes of these 1980 Topps football with the much desired Ottis Anderson RCs in them!
I've always been a football guy first but I was also a major basketball fan. Football cards were worthless at the time and basketball was pretty much garbage in the 80s so I went with the slightly more popular sport in football. The worst part is that I went to Michigan State at the same time as Magic and was actually in the same Freshman class as he was ('77/78). But yet I went with the Ottis Anderson RC! SMH!!!
To quote Dr. Smith from the 1960's tv show "Lost In Space" ............................... "Oh the pain! The pain!".

I'm guessing you never saw the coveted Ottis Anderson RC... and were stuck with tons of kindling for a bbq.
