I recently won an ebay auction but when I received the card it was not the parallel version that the title stated I was bidding on. I've never had to return and item before, so how do I proceed here? Do I contact the seller and tell them I am returning the card, or do I open a case so that I am covered? I don't want to just return the card and the seller keep my money also.

I would contact the seller first, before opening a case. A lot of sellers, like myself, will make it right without involving ebay/paypal. They keep track of those cases and even if the seller makes things right it still counts against them.

I would contact the seller and see if they acknowledge the problem and what they are willing to do. In some cases it may be that there is some residual value for the card you received in which case a partial refund might be negotiated with you keeping the card, in other instances it may be that you have no use for the item and strictly want a refund, which again they may also be willing to do. This was exactly the problem I had in trying to get my 2004 Cracker Jack Mini Blue Alex Rodriguez card, the SP is card number 17 while the more common card which I already had is unnumbered. The seller listed it as the SP, but when it arrived it had no number. The seller was okay with a return for refund rather than a reduced cost, and I couldn't negotiate postage costs, but it was a respectable outcome that was in line with what I would have had if I had filed a claim.

Thanks for the input guys. I contacted the seller and have not yet opened a case, will wait for his/her response. It will be a refund request as I have no use for the card at all. Will I be refunded my total purchase cost including the shipping charges that I paid? I realize I will have to pay to ship the card back of course.

You should get a full refund including s/h, which is what you would get if filing a claim. I would also ask for the postage to send it back. The few times I had to give a refund that's what I did as it's not the customer's fault I sent them the wrong item. Why should it cost the customer ANYTHING for the seller's screw up.

I think Ebay even covers the shipping charges now when both parties agree.

I would contact them if its a base card that isn't much they may just send it out and tell you to keep the card. If they give you a hard time open a case. Once it is resolved ebay will have you click on a link to print out there own pre paid postage.
