Question for Super Collectors

Dear Super Collectors,
How are you building your all inclusive lists? Is there one source already out there? Are you putting it together piece by piece over time?

I am trying to be an Eric Davis Super Collector and I am always finding new cards for him either on eBay, trade sites (personal and otherwise), etc.

Thanks for tips and advice!

WIth a BEckett OPG subscription you can generate a Checklist of a ll major released cards of a player. It is by no means a COMPLETE list as there are always cards out there that BEckett doesnt recognize or list in their price guides, But it is better than shooting from the hip

+1 to what Slavlite mentioned.

With a player from the era you're collecting from... you will find a ton of regionals, oddballs etc that Beckett completely whiffs on. If you run into another collector for Davis, see if they have a more complete checklist to work off of.

Good stuff...I don't have an OPG sub and I really have never needed it because I am still using hardcopy guides. Finding another Davis collector has been difficult because he doesn't float to the top of what most people consider a star, but he was no slouch either. Dare I say semi-star??? (in my book he was and is super not only for his MLB career but what he does off the field and in his personal life).

Also check into the Inventory Manager over at SportsCardForum. It includes a lot of stuff Beckett does not. But over all, for my player collections, I've had to do a lot of research to fill out the list of what actually exists. Beckett no longer has sufficient staff to keep their catalog up to date with more obscure sets.

Ok, thanks...I am also a Roberto Kelly collector (not a Super Collector)...I like how you have his cards displayed, nice job. I saw him play with the Clippers in the mid-late 80's when I was a teenager, very sharp coming out of the minors, never hit it real big though.

Kelly was one of the few bright spots on some terrible Yankee teams from 1989-1992, yet he never got the recognition he deserved. Still, he managed two consecutive All Star appearances. I never understood why he didn't settle in anywhere and was constantly on the move after leaving New York. But then, I never understood why Kenny Lofton never got any long term contracts either.

There's also the opposite problem, you will find a card once in a while that Beckett lists but does not actually exist. That's when asking the collectors on this board can help a lot, and you can cross another one off off the list.

With Trent Dilfer, I've been heavily collecting him for 15 years and he hasn't had any cards made in a few years now, but still once in a while something will pop up that I have to add to my wantlist.

I don't know if they still do it, but Beckett used to release a Baseball Card Alphabetical Checklist book every couple of years, which listed every card for every player. There also used to be a Sport Americana Team checklist book written by Jeff Fritsch every few years, for team collectors where it listed every card by team per year.

Beachbum, welcome to the Bench! Dilferules hit a great point. Beckett has been a great help to my collection but has had me chasing ghosts for years. (cards that I don’t think exists) as well.

A daily search of Ebay over the years will get you familiar with cards you never saw as well. I do see plenty of Davis stuff in my searches for Paul O’neill. Its funny that I ended up collecting O’neill, both Davis and O’neill played for my hometown Waterbury Reds and I remembered him well. O’neill only played 14 games there and I don’t remember him at all. I guess it was the Yankees that got me collecting him.

A baseball card Site that a lot of us use here for buying is www.checkoutmycards.com. It is also a great reference because they post pictures of all the cards they sell to get an idea what they look like.

There is a ton of card knowledge on this Site as well. I learned a lot from the other members with card info.

Onionring9 has a great site and got me organized with my APBA, game cards, non-Beckett stuff.

Tpeichel is a collector of Oddball and Broder type cards who sells a Electronic Catalog of Broder type cards. It was fun to show hi some cards that he did not know about and off he went looking for them to inventory.

Mrmopar is a wealth of knowledge of oddball sets, regional, off the beaten path cards and vintage.

Hi welcome ! Also I use a combination of all those listed and also The Trading card database site , they have a good site . Also I think Dlackey might have a list , as he is a Reds collector ! And he has a lot of them (Particularly Votto and Larkin , but he collects Davis as well !! Jeff
