I got sooooo lucky with 1978 Topps Football 10 years after the fact. In 1988 or '87 yet another LCS opened up in the Syracuse area and this was right at the begining of the baseball card frenzy. People were killing themselves to get the 1987 (or 1988, can't remember) baseball issues and I of course was one of them. This new store had a bin with hundreds of loose 1978 Topps football wax packs for .50 cents each. I was interested in all of them for sure but this was the era of pack tampering so to play it safe I only bought 36 packs and opened them up thinking if I got a Dorsett RC, I'd go buy the remainder. Sure enough not one , but two TD RCs were in the packs so I went back and bought the rest.

Of course me, being me, opened all the packs and put together a ton of sets. I wish I were smart enough to not open the packs but because of the epidemic of pack tampering..........and if you are a sportscard OG (Old Goat) like I am you know what I'm talking about.............I opened them all up. Football was complete trash until 1989 when Pro Set and Score came out so any sport that was not baseball was exceedingly inexpensive. Good thing I like football over baseball or I would have passed on these .50 packs.

Yeah hindsight is always 20/20, but hey you got a few sets out of the deal. The real question is though, did you attempt to eat the 10 year old gum?

LMAO! No. What is funny today is with all the unopned Topps junk wax out there, that the gum in those packs is nearly 40 years old!!! 10 year old gum seems fresh by comparison!

Yes, although even fresh it tasted like it was 10 to 15 years old... I remember a buddy had purchased a pack of 79 topps around the same time and on a dare from the shop owner ate the gum. He said it basically disintegrated instantly in his mouth. It's funny too because 2 of the major card companies in the 80's topps and fleer, both distributed gum as well. Double Bubble for fleer and Bazooka for topps. Neither held it's flavor very well but was fun to chew when busting packs or playing ball.

And a pretty good manager too

Very true! Harvey's Wallbangers! I looked it up and saw he was the Brewers manager for only 1982 & 1983. Even though he took them to the World Series in 1982, they fired him after the 1983 Season when he finished 5th with a decent record of 87-75. What a short leash!
