Tiger fans flipped out when the Tigs passed on Detroit Catholic Central's Frank Tanana in the 1971 draft and picked Tom Veryzer instead. Tanana went next as the 12th overall pick and along with Nolan Ryan became one of the most dominant 1-2 starting pitcher duos in the history even drawing comparisons to Koufax and Drysdale.. I remember that short period of dominance well until Tanana hurt his arm. There was a play on the old Spahn/SAin saying with Ryan and Tanana which was "Tanana and Ryan and 2 days of cryin'.".
