Scobes scores with a double header today. The best looking baseball set of all time in 1967 Topps IMO and a cool combo card with the clever titles. When it comes to cards it doesn't get much better than that.

Your hometown guy! Did you get that in person or is it from a pack?
Had to get it from the Bay... doing more research on him I realized he has to be the most talented and most successful people to come out of Grand Prairie. Held alot of records in both positions he played, pro bowls, went to Super Bowl (lost to Dolphins in '72 season), 2 position baseball player in college, scouted for the Redskins, consultant for them after that...

He was an absolute A-List star back in his playing days. He held the record for most career receptions when he retired which I believe Steve Largent eventually broke. I'm pretty sure he began his Redskin career as a running back before movine to wide receiver , thus the number 42.

He ended up going to Arizona State because SEC, ACC and Southwest Conference schools did not allow blacks to play. That certainly helped Big Ten schools like Minnesota and my Alma Mater Michigan State to recruit guys that they never would have gotten otherwise.

And thanks to you explaining the meaning of Charley Taylor's high school's name, I'll never forget that as long as I live.

Ah yes... Dalworth. A sordid part of the GP history. I haven't found any issues with integration when it moved it's students to GP High School... unlike an infamous event that happened not too far from where I live now.

You'll find this very interesting seeing as you know about segragation in the 50s and 60s. My dad played football for Syracuse University from 1947 through 1949 and in his Junior and Senior years their starting QB was a guy named Bernie Custis who was black. Now this is in the late 40s, mind you. Even in the early 70s it was widely believed blacks could not play QB or believe it or not .................Middle linebacker!! And yet Syracuse had a black starting QB in the late 40s!

Here is Bernie Custis's wikipedia page.

On the subject of pioneering black QB's, my HS had Craig Curry in the mid '60s (before I was there). He led Coral Gables to the HS national championship in '67, then went on to QB the Minnesota Golden Gophers for 3 years.
