Wasn't his nickname "Manster"? I'm not 100% sure which it was.

I think one of the questionable players in this set was Staubach if my memory is correct. He had retired some years before this set was put out. That being said, his immense popularity certainly justifies adding him to the set.
You're right... I keep calling him Manimal. I forget who coined Manster but I think they called him that because he was half man, half monster.
Who am I thinking of when I say Manimal??? Might've been a movie...
Ya Staubach, Waters, DuPree... goes to show what kind of guys were on the team in the 80s. Too Tall was still on the team... could've shown him at least!

I'm happy to read that other kids ruined their cards back then... I'm sure you've seen the '61/'62 Post and Topps cards my Dad glued in a scrap book. The Post cards are especially hard to look at since it seems he used a hatchet to cut them from the box. Mantle, Frank Robinson, Maris, Banks, Minosa, McCovey, Drysdale... among others... just butchered! Still wouldn't part with any of them for a million bucks each!
What do you expect, they were on cereal boxes fer chrissakes. We grabbed some funky school scissors when we finished the box and snipped out the player. I don't think we even considered them cards like the ones we got in packs. I only have one from those days, Robin Roberts.

I understand all that, but from what I heard from my Dad, those guys were like God's amongst men... I would think ya'll would've coveted them like a shiny nickel! Im not saying putting them in a protective sleeve (if they had them back then) but not to draw on them and to TRY to cut along those black lines... I say all this in a time that some collectors wont even look at a card unless it's at least graded at a 9. What's next? Hard plastic cards that are damage resistant?

When I was 6, the year of that Robin Roberts, ballplayers were not gods amongst men.
'64 packs came with coins, I had multiple Mays, Koufax, Ford, Clemente. We used to throw them in the deep end of the pool and go diving to the bottom to pick them up. They were toys. Like GI Joes, which we used to light on fire cuz it was cool to see them melt as they fell to the ground in their parachutes.

Went to the National yesterday in Chicago....too many people for this cat.....the card bros were out in numbers, sitting on rolling suitcases in the aisles, backpacks so full when they turned sideways half the aisle was blocked(combined with rolling suitcase guy, impassable). Just wasn't fun....so enough with people on my lawn, paid the asking price of $50 for this. I'm not much for haggling over price, seemed fair to me....forgot about phone-in-face-comp guys standing in front of tables for what seemed like an eternity....I said I was done! 🙃

My anxiety would have me yelling and running to the nearest exit to get out of a scene like that!! How many cards did you pick up? Was it at least worth it to find cards you normally wouldn't see?

Picked up 2 cards, and since I'm a gentleman, I posted this one today, and the other tomorrow 😁 I believe it was almost worth it....might try and go later in the day next time, believe I was there around 11am, and it was bananas....really should have taken down booth numbers of things I saw and wanted to circle back to....I guess I could go back Sunday 😅

I'd try to go first thing in the day when they open... if you go on the last day and wait 'till the end of the show you may feel like the guy at the club looking for a hottie to take home, but they're all gone, so you have to settle on the 3. On the other hand, if you go late when all the dealers are tired and just want to leave you MAY be able to find some stuff and (dare I say) haggle to the absolute minimum. Dealers will probably accept a low ball offer then because they want to get rid of it and no one else is coming, and because they're too tired to argue prices. Try using the "Throw-In" method I like to use, when I get the courage to venture out in crowds... Find a decent card for around $50, and a cool lower end card... try to widdle the dealer down on the $50 card then when they get to a price you're willing to pay say, "I'll do that, if you throw-in such-n-such card." I bought my Jerry Rice RC that way... got the dealer down to $35 (this was when the card was only $50 BV) and a Randy Moss RC that on the back it said he missed training camp due to "Oral surgery" What was the oral surgery, you ask? He was getting braces! lmao
**My bad for the rambling....

I've heard going to The National is a real pain. If I ever went to one again, I would have 1 or 2 scarce items in mind to buy. It doesn't seem to be a place to take your time wheeling and dealing like a regular card show,

I did say "again" because I actually went to the 2nd one in suburban Detroit back in 1981. I just had to look up the exact suburb since I could not remember what it was (Plymouth, M_I.) That National was held before cards were even a "thing". I'm not sure if there were even price guides back then and if they were they were the very first ones and baseball only. Forget football and basketball cards, no one wanted that crap except for me! That National would have been the equivalent in size of a small to medium sized regional show these days.

very nice looking card.
My favorite Garagiola quote is when someone asked him about his catching career. He answered "Not only was I not the best catcher in the major leagues. I wasn't even the best catcher on my street!"
That's cuz he grew up on the same block in St. Louis as Yogi Berra.
