sometimes it's not easy being a player collector....

i wont either, but sometimes i get so frustrated i could do it i think lol...was a bad night last night.

I know the feeling. I did something almost as bad. Back in 1998-2000 I kept getting dominated on ebay by two guys with deeper pockets than I had. Then one Rusty Greer collector sold out her collection to both of them. Then one sold out to the other. To make matters even worse, this guy with deep pockets would get sellers to pull their items off ebay and deal. This made me lose my enjoyment of the hobby and I quit for TEN years :(

exactly...lost a /5 laundry patch last night...pissed me off the way it went down.

So...a while back I was bidding on a Bradshaw print plate on ebay...I usually pick them up for between $20 and $50 or so...which is fine, I'm good with that...and there was one up for auction so I waitied until the last min and threw a $100 bid on it and lost...it wasn't auto or anything...just a regular plate...kinda pissed me off and made me a bit curious as to who would do such a thing and pay this much.

Well...fast forward to last night...I get home late from picking up some meds for my wife...there is a Topps Tribute plate on ebay...and I'm in a hurry to get my bid in...and in the back of my mind i remember the last time I bid and lost so I throw down a $200 bid...the plate was at $20.50 before i bid and this is what happened:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2010-topps-Trib...0741355196?pt=US_Football&hash=item336535c6bc

so...I'm left scratching my head wondering what the hell is going on here.

Someone outbid you. Maybe they've been dealing with what you're going through for a while now. Trying to pick up some Bradshaw 1/1's and constantly losing at $20-50, while other All Pro caliber players go for $5-10. They finally get frustrated enough they throw a $250 bid out there just to get one, they finally do and they had to pay over $100. The next one comes up and now they have to pay over $200 to win because someone got upset they were outbid last time. When two people want the same thing, reason often flies out the window.

like i said...hope they enjoy $300+ worth of two non-auto print plates...they keep getting posted for sale on ebay, they wont go cheap.

You lost me with this comment. Are you saying you want to burn your collection because someone outbid you, and are you saying the person is a dirtbag because they outbid you?

If money doesn't mean much to you. bid $1000 each time and you'll probably win them all.

sometimes i feel like just getting my Bradshaw stuff in a huge pile and burning it all up in flames and doing a video of the whole thing...i get tired of dealing with dirtbags...its getting to the point where it's not worth it..and money doesn't mean much to me, i'd just assume watch it burn.

Works fine for the seller. If the you or other bidder wants them and have the money, more power to you both. You just seem to be overly upset about getting outbid.

I have to agree with this. You got outbid, it happens, I'm sure you've outbid countless other people in the past with your collection, so now you're getting worked up about one or two times that someone tops your bid.

Also, if money doesn't mean much to you, I'd be more than happy to take a donation for my collections, and I'd never burn them. :)

i never really saw player collecting as a competition. i collect because i enjoy it and i really like my ernie banks collection. i couldnt see myself way overpaying for something just to have it or bidding another bank collector up because i was mad i couldnt afford the item. to each his own and im definatly not trying to criticize anyones methods of player collecting because there is no right method. but it almost seems like your player collection isnt giving you the job it used to if its become more about running other people up on price or just beating them. i could be wrong but thats sort of what i got from what ive read.

no...I didn't get outbid on anything...I had a deal worked out to buy a card, price was agreed upon and the whole 9 yards...then he sticks it on ebay and i guess got a higher offer, ended the auction early after telling me i had the card...sold it to someone else?

sometimes the chase gets ugly and it pisses you off dealing with people who dont honor thier word, thus the dirtbag...there were several things that happened leading up to that post.

Also, I didn't say i had unlimited funds, I said money doesn't mean much to me...I just spend it and don't worry about it a lot...I'm not like Gene Simmons so to speak lol...if he lives long enough, he will have all the money.

I don't mind getting outbid on something...i do mind being lied to.

I'm also not saying I am "running up the bid" on anyone...to do that you would have no intention of actually winning...I'm just saying stuff wont go cheap and I won't make static bids on stuff at $200 every time in case the other person thinks that is my bid point on things...I will vary it, so if they are going to try to run the bid up (someone said maybe I pissed off another collector earlier in the thread) then they will pay some high bills for what they do get....in return with the "money doesn't mean much" ...I don't mind to "overpay" for things...but, I certainly can't afford to bid $1000 on everything I want.

hope that explains a little bit of where I am coming from...if not here is the short version:

in short, I had a bad couple of days and was just venting a little....lol.
