Hello player collectors,

I managed to pickup an EXTREMELY rare Mookie Wilson for the Player Collection...

1989 Topps Mets Yankees Doubleheader Mookie Wilson Test issue WITH PACK!

The ebay seller smricher12 has some of these and some sealed packs as well, they are not at auction right now, but contact him and he will list them. It was not cheap, but it is the first time I have even seen the card...ever! These are very strange as they are mini's in a plastic stand. The card is just a piece of paper printed on both sides.

I have that set (at least the Yankees part) in my Yankees collection. I very rarely see it offered. Interesting thing is that the Strawberry and Mattingly are exactly the same as the mass produced National Issue, but the guides show them at a high price. The ones like Mookie are actually more scarce- heck, I think these qualify as rare.

Wasn't the easier set issued the next year though? The "now" card should be 1990 on the national set, the the "then" card being the rookie if I remember correctly. I have a bunch of them in a box, but don't want to dig them out.

Otherwise there would be no way to tell the test issue set apart from the regular issue.

You really have to wonder how "rare" a lot of the newer issues are though. I would bet there are people sitting on huge lots of many of the "rare" items, leaking them out slowly. I knew a card shop owner in Seattle who had 100s of a supposed SP Husky football card. I think they were pulled from the set because of some funny business with the player, but the shop owner apparently ended up with many, perhaps all, of them! I remember he was selling singles for $20-25 with the rest of the set maybe going for $10 w/o the SP or $30 w/ SP. The player never panned out, so now most really don't care much about a scrub SP in a college FB set.

Nice pick up for the collection there though. Nobody I collect is in the set, at least the test issue set. Even that wrapper would make a nice collectible for a Winfield fan.

There is also a 1989 Doubleheaders set that is the exact same, but the Mookie only appeared in the Mets Yankees regional test issue, these were only issued in NY and like I said this is the first one I have ever seen, I have seen MANY of the regular 1989 Doubleheaders.
