I don't think you are getting the love your thread shout-out deserves, you are doing a altruistic service based on motivation and recognition of and for your students. That-a-way, Jay! I will start pulling Yankee cards together, they will tend to be low end commons and junk wax, with some stars... you can give out the commons in a five count giveaway. Thanks for the shout out.

We have five weeks left until the kids are free for the summer. I teach in a district of about 700 (and dropping) PreK -12 students so I, like many of my colleagues, teach multiple grade levels and disciplines. I‘m certified in English and Social Studies and teach four sections of ELA 7 and two of Social Studies 8. Decades ago I taught HS English and Global Studies and frankly, I find middle school kids more interesting to teach and interact with. Unfortunately, my freedom will be short-lived. Two weeks after school is out, I begin my summer job. For years I’ve taught summer school at a school that serves ten schools in my area. Some years they have me teach Social Studies, some years they have me teach English. Some years I teach middle school, other years I teach high school. Like every year, I won’t know until a few days before the kids arrive.

I’ve given out cards for years, but this year the interest and need has increase tremendously. In previous years, only a handful of students would have interest in free cards. Now, I have 14.

As a veteran teacher, I know that my job is secure - I’m top of the seniority totem pole in the English Department and smack dab in the middle in the Social Studies Department. Because of this, picking up cards and giving them away is not a great burden. However, for many of the kids I teach, their parents were out of work for close to a year due to the pandemic. For these kids, there is no extra money for cards. This is just my way of trying to brighten their day somewhat and keep them academically motivated.

I apologize for the length of this post but when I read your post, I was reminded of just how fortunate I am to have the life that I lead and many of my problems pale in comparison to those of the kids that I serve.

Thanks for pulling those Yankee cards for me. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
