Who Should I collect

I want to try and collect a player...every card from base to autos and refractors, but I'm not sure who to collect. My favorite team is the Phillies and I've always loved Utley, but I was thinking maybe I should collect a retired player. Then I decided I've always loved Jeter and Pujols but I just can't make up my mind...I guess I'm just asking for suggestions

What about Mike Schmidt? You have one coming your way from me, I know, so that makes one. ;) I know his GU/AUs can be tough to get, though.

to be honest I really was considering him but then I realized that for every base common I have of him I would need 3...one for my personal collection since I like to have 3 of every player...one for my topps phillies collection and then 1 for my schmidt collection

I get what you mean. I picked Luke Hughes rather than a star player to try to collect because there would be many of that players cards I'd need two of; one for sets and one for the player collection.

You could warm up with a collection of Kim Batiste....then take a stab at Mike Lieberthal just to make sure you're in the groove and BAM!

GARRY FREAKING MADDOX!

No one saw that coming, and you'll have the whole market to yourself before anyone has a chance to get their wits about them!

Pujols, Jeter, Utley, those guys are going to cost you more than if you get a common player that has impressed you in some way. Especially if you want to get three of each. Some decent players to consider would be Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Mitch Williams, Mike Lieberthal, Lenny Dykstra, Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu, etc from previous teams. Jim Bunning and Robin Roberts are fairly low-end priced HoFers if you want to go that route. Richie Ashburn has some pricey cards, particularly the cuts, but most of his cards are affordable. Werth and Rollins are viable from the current team but there are so many 1/1s and low-numberd cards for current players it is still challenging. Schmidt, Utley, Howard and Carlton are forgone if you are looking for a cost-saving player.

Just some thoughts.

My advice is collect who you like. I'm a John Smoltz collector. I don't own a single 1\1. I still have nearly 500 different cards of his and can find lots from time to time that add greatly to that total. He Hank Aaron and Brian McCann are my favorite Braves. But back to your question, collect someone that, after you spend your time and money getting, sorting and storing the cards, will put a smile on your face. Chances are every year new cards will be added to the list of "needs".

Good luck with whoever you decide to collect.

i'd pick a new player/rookie that has just come out you like and go from there...many of the low numbered inserts dry up fast and you will just be waiting years to get them if you miss them when the case busts are over.

Maybe Domonic Brown or someone like that who doesn't have a ton of cards already out there....you can get them as you go and it's always fun to pull a card of someone you collect from a pack...makes those nasty box breaks a little easier.

If you go after someone like Schmidt then you have a mountain of cards to chase and not many new ones that are not autos...and you can forget tracking down 100% of the low numbered stuff that is already out there...you just wont see it for sale.
