Interesting that Adam Vinatieri only has one rookie card and that is from the 1997 Pacific Philadelphia set. And he did not have a card made in 1998 either. That Pacific Philadelphia set is loaded with obscure players that I am guessing never had another card made of them. It really is a strange set!

I'll guess 65 for today's guess. Thanks!

Guess for today - #23. Thanks.

Nothing to add today, mentally depleted after 3 hours of winter baseball workouts this morning.

Would like 53 please.
As a Pats fan since 79, I was 10 learning about the American Revolution and seeing a minuteman on a helmet was too cool. I turned off that Raiders game after the fumble, figuring it was over. What a surprise to see the Pats back on the field and then to win. Wow. makes up for that 1-15 and 2-14 seasons. Go Steve Grogan!

I wish the Pats would go back to their old helmets with the Patriot playing center on them. The AFL was unbeatable when it came to uniforms. Not one of the modernizations of the old uniforms has been an improvement. The Broncos, Patriots, Bills, Dolphins and especially the Chargers all have much poorer looking uniforms then their older styles. And the old Charger uniforms from the 1960s and 1970s almost always end up #1 on the best all time uniforms lists. The old Oilers uniforms were great too with the powder blue jerseys and the oil derrick on the side of the helmets.

I was not familiar with that set, but Adam would have been an obscure player then, as i didnt realize until recently that he was signed as an undrafted free agent and had played for the Amsterdam Admirals of the now-defunct NFL Europe before signing with the Pats (who did have very cool uniforms in the 80s, no doubt!). I also read that Adam spent two weeks at West Point and had been recruited to play for Army, but ended up coming back to his native South Dakota, playing for SDSU. In reference to earlier posts about "what if..." makes one wonder what would have happened had he never been signed out of NFL Europe, or stayed at Army, etc.

Some Stats: 2,378 points (3rd on the all time scoring list behind Morten Andersen with 2,544 and Gary Anderson--no relation-- with 2,434), 30 playoff games (second to Tom Brady's 31!) and 4 Super Bowl victories (though there are 38 players with 4 rings, many in the HOF!)

I would think he had a lock on the NFL HOF, what are all of your opinions on the topic??

Guess for today - #20.

He is a kicker. If he makes the HOF, it should be in a special wing. The same holds true for DH's in the baseball HOF.

Adam Vinatieri making the HOF is an interesting question as it is really hard to put kickers into the HOF. I think Jan Stenerud is the only pure kicker in the Hall and Ray Guy (who so many thought was a lock to get in) is the only punter and it took him a loooong time to finally make it. I always thought both Andersons would get in also but that is looking doubtful. Vinatieri's big plus is all the game winning field goals he hit for the Pats in the Playoffs and Super bowls. I think he'll get in eventually but won't be a first ballot entry due to his position.

Wide receiver seems to be the other position where you think a player is a lock and it seems to take several (if not many) years for them to get in. Art Monk, Chris Carter, Tim Brown and Marvin Harrison are all in that category to varying degrees. I know Harrison got in on the second try but he was second to only Jerry Rice in most major career receiving categories when he retired which seems to me would make him a first ballot entry.

The Pro Football HOF has lost a lot of meaning for me because it seems like a good old boys network. They seem to always put owners, executives and commissioners in while overlooking deserving players.

Agreed with the above, Jeff and Katester, it is definitely tough for kickers to make it, though they generally are a very consistent source of offense, and are on the field after almost every touchdown! Wide receivers are also overlooked that is true, Marvin had Peyton Manning throwing to him for a long time, and Rice had Joe Cool, so that always helps!! (of course, I would say Jerry Rice would have led the league with me throwing to him, he was just that good!)

It will be interesting to see, he had a LONG stay in the NFL for two successful teams, but it will be wild if a 4 time Super Bowl winner gets overlooked altogether! Kickers definitely have a tough time and do get dumped on....hero or goat, depending on whether they make the clutch kick or just miss!

Love the conversation, let's keep it rolling!

God Bless,

Kevin
