i am going with 75 today
on kickers i do believe there are a couple of kickers in the hall of fame if you want to include Paul Horuning who played for green bay and Lou The Toe Groza who played for the browns

Numbers taken: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 29, 31, 34, 39, 43, 44, 46, 48, 52, 53, 55, 59, 60, 65, 66, 69, 71, 72, 74, 75, 79, 80, 88, 91, 92, 99.

True Chief but Groza, Horning as well as Sammy Baugh and George Blanda got in for their performances outside of kicking too. As far as pure kickers/punters I think it is only Stenerud and Ray Guy.

As far as wide receivers go, I am shocked that many are saying Calvin Johnson is not a HOFer. I know he only played 9 seasons but he was drafted in the same class as Adrian Peterson and has played in 12 more games than AP has. And no one is saying Peterson did not play long enough if he retired today. While Johnson may not have the biggest numbers among wide receivers he was the best and most feared wide out in the game for 5 or 6 years in a league loaded with quality receivers. I think the guy is a lock for the Hall.

has any team had as many dominant, freakishly athletic players as the Lions (Megatron, Suh and Barry) and yet can not accomplish anything save for one playoff win in 1991? It is jus unreal with that team.

I'll go with 97 for today's guess. Thanks again for another fun contest and thread.

Agreed, was thinking of Blanda, and forgot about Slingin' Sammy, the pioneer of the forward pass! Players did double and triple duty in those days, playing positions on both sides of the ball, and getting good at multiple roles. Interesting to think of how players then would stack up against players now....

Loving this thread! Keep it going, friends!

God Bless,

Kevin

Kevin, I know you started this contest with the date of the Tuck rule game coming up but did you know that today is the 50th Anniversary of Super Bowl 1 (known back then the NFL vs AFL Championship Game)? They were talking about it on the Cowboys/Packers broadcast today and they said the game only took 2 hours and 37 minutes to play, 30 second commercials were $42,000 and top priced tickets to the game were only $12.

I know times have changed but what I wouldn't give to have today's games last 2 hours and 37 minutes!!!

No I did not know that Jeff, but those numbers are amazing.....I ran $42,000 through the inflation calculator, and that is about $301,000 now....I bet a 30 second commercial is SLIGHTLY pricier than that this year!! And the time? I feel like today's Super Bowls last about 2 weeks and 37 minutes!!

That Green Bay/Dallas game was really something, wasnt it?? Another Kicker victory!

Todays guess - #51.

Everyone needs to remember, it is the Hall Of Fame..not the Hall of Really, Really Good. It amazes me every year who gets nominated and who gets elected. Everyone talks about Philip Rivers, Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger as all being locks for the HOF. If Roethlisberger gets another super bowl win, he will get in. The other two, no chance they should get in.

Kevin they did mention what a 30 second commercial went for today and it was something like 6.4 million. That figure may not be exact but I am pretty sure that is close to what they said. Super Bowl commercials are just "slightly" outpacing the rate of inflation.

I'd love to see regular season games only last 2 hours and 37 minutes! These games drag on waaaaay too long which is one of the many reasons I don't watch as much NFL as I used to.

That Dallas/Green Bay game was something else. For one of the few times in my life I was rooting for the Cowboys and they lost! But three 50+ yd field goals in the last minute or two was a shocker. I would have thought at least one of them would have been missed.

My guess today is #84.

Big bucks for everything today and nothing is simple. My son (46yrs old) is always saying how he would still like to be a kid in the 70s again when everything was pretty simple. I just laugh and tell him it was real simple in the 50s when sportscards were 5cents a pack w/12 cards and a real good piece of gum that lasted all day without losing its taste.ha ha. Mike

Jeff, the millions (billions, really) involved in sports are just indicated by the moneymaker the Super Bowl is, and has become.....incredible the hoopla that goes into it, for weeks before! I think more so than any other sporting event, the SB is #1 for advertising, fanfare, ticket prices, etc. And honestly, games like GB vs. Dallas are usually a LOT more interesting than the actual big game.....lots of nerves, and often players don't perform to their potential. Hope we get a really intense, close, hard fought game this year....regardless of my NFL opinions, I do enjoy getting together with our family members to watch the game, reminds me of my childhood (and the 85 Bears, subjects of my next contest!!)

As far as the HOF, my best friend calls it the Hall of Above Average, and I think that is what it has become in every sport. I would never mention Rivers, Roethlisberger, or E. Manning in the same sentence as Unitas or Montana, by any means. The last few years for the baseball HOF have been some very strong candidates. PED users aside, I think there have been more deserving baseball players in the last two or three years than in probably the 8 or 10 years prior. It is subjective, though a player has to be VERY good to be truly considered alongside the greats who came before (Ruth, Gehrig, Musial, etc.)

Mike, your statement about life being easier....I was born in 1981, and I agree that life was simpler then, I can't even imagine life in the 50s, less to want, less to worry about....God willing our children's lives will be less complicated, or as simple as they can be for the times we live in!

LOVING the posts too!!

KCLJ520;3727399 And honestly said:
A radio talk show host on WFAN in New York City named Joe Beningo says that the last weekend for the real football fan is Conference Championship weekend and that the Super bowl is not geared for the hard core football fan. This guy is 63 years old and is a walking encyclopedia of pro football and he is 100% right. The Super Bowl is not geared towards the football fan but for non football fans. There is just way too much nonsense and extra cirriculars going on to make the Super Bowl enjoyable for me.

That same talk show host also said that the NFL is getting overexposed with the Sunday night , Thursday night and Sunday morning games from Europe. It really is just too much anymore and when you throw in the 4.5 to 5 hour games it is beyond time consuming. When the hard core pro football fan is getting tired and bored with the game that is really saying something.
