I LOVE Cooperstown. I've been five times in my life, and each has meant something different. I've actually been lucky enough to participate in the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture. I'm a teacher/scholar-type guy and I still can't believe that I gave a talk IN the Hall of Fame. I'm going this spring, too. You're surrounded by brilliant nerds and they have a townball game and everything. Oh! and we had dinner in the plaque gallery. Amazing.
I agree about Yaz sports. They have a lot of stuff and at reasonable prices. I got a Lew Burdette auto and my first $15 pack of cards. (I splurged.) There was an older gentleman there (the owner's father?) and he and I have different politics, but he was very nice and friendly.
Do go see all of the other shops, too. There's a shop opposite Yaz that has a door signed by all of the Hall of Famers who have come through. They have reasonably priced packs and some autos. But be careful! The places often close "early", around 6-ish during the slow seasons.
The Hall of Fame exhibits do rotate on occasion. For example, there was a baseball-and-cricket exhibit last June. They do keep it fresh while retaining all of the stuff we all want to see. Curious what is there now? http://baseballhall.org/museum/exhibits/overview
There is a hot dog place right across from the Hall of Fame in the basement of the building...the food was pretty good and the vibe seemed fun.
Sigh...now I am even more excited for the conference this year. The area is beautiful. Enjoy your trip!
