in case the article isnt free in a few days, here it is.
Clackamas County sheriff's detectives on Tuesday raided a home of a man with a long criminal history now suspected of selling fake sports memorabilia, including baseballs signed "Babe Ruth" and "Roger Maris."
The resident, Chad Richard Baldwin, 39, was taken into custody, but then released. He remains under investigation for theft by deception, computer crimes, identity theft and criminal simulation, said Sgt. James Rhodes, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
Rhodes said investigators believe Baldwin may have sold additional phony items to others and are asking for other potential victims to come forward. He said all the cases will be sent to the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office for review.
Rhodes said Baldwin advertised on Craigslist, offering for sale items with forged signatures of sports stars. Rhodes said Baldwin also falsified certificates of authenticity issued by reputable companies as JSA Authentication and PSA/DNA Authentication.
In April, Rhodes said, Baldwin advertised an autographed "Roger Maris" baseball on Craigslist, selling it to a Sherwood man, along with authentication certificate
Also in April, Rhodes said, Baldwin advertised an autographed "Babe Ruth" baseball, which he sold to a Vancouver man.
Both balls and both certificates were determined to be fraudulent, Rhodes said.
In 1998, Baldwin was convicted in U.S. District Court of holding up an armored car the previous year. He was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison and was ordered to repay Oregon Armored Services Inc. more than $22,000 in restitution.
In addition, he was convicted in Multnomah County Circuit Court of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in connection with the same incident.
Rhodes urged anyone with information to call the sheriff's confidential tip line at 503-723-4949. Confidential text messages can be sent to CRIMES (274637 on a cell phone keypad), with the keyword "CCSO" as the first word in the message.
