Has anyone else felt that they have lost their passion for the hobby? I still love cards, but I don't have the same drive to collect anymore. Ive been selling some stuff off to clean up the collection and the money just sits in the paypal account, thinking that I'll start buying again here or on ebay. I see Chavez, Roy and Drexler cards I need, but I don't even have a want to further those collections either. Maybe I'm in a funk or maybe I have found other priorities in my life that seem more important? I don't have kids at the moment and money isn't an issue, so I'm not sure what it is? If anyone has felt this way in the past or even now, please let me know.

I know what you mean. I have gone through some roller coasters over the years. My Gehrig collection has always been first and foremost even when I all but stopped other side projects. Then I will find that one gem on eBay that gets me jumpstarted again.

There is just so much out there and it is hard to get rid of the stuff you don't collect which is why I quit buying boxes and focus on the singles I need. It really all boils down to what makes you happy. Worst case box them up, put them away and down the road you may get revigorated.

I am in a funk too I think. I've made one trade in two months, and with all the sets out there, and me needing to finish some, I just lost my drive.

3 of the sets have SP's, and I just don't have the cash to buy them, nor the tradebait to land them. Many of the cards I need I can't get because someone who has busted 3 boxes of cards can help someone finish their needs, and the ones who can't afford to are left in the dust.

I dunno. There's plenty of sets I need to finish, but I haven't had the money, or passion myself lately. Still watching baseball like crazy, but I just can't keep up with the big dogs anymore!! :)

This is the first month in a while I've traded, and it's mainly to start dumping cards. Other than 70's vintage sets, the only other thing I collected was 2002 Studio, which I am currently breaking up. Time to use some of that money on other things.

It takes effort to stay locked in. Like many will say, put them away and something will reignite the passion, If not, you can always sell.

I do have a couple months a year that I don't really feel like trading but make up for it in the summer when I don't have to balance with schoolwork. Every time I pick up set needs, it makes me feel one step closer to my ultimate goal, which is completing the set. That is what keeps me trading.. just the thought that every trade counts, but I also enjoy helping others with their sets. There are so many things you can collect out there, whether it's players, sets, or teams so maybe you need to find something else you enjoy collecting. Or if that doesn't help, maybe you just need a break and maybe that'll help recharge the battery.

Thanks everyone. Maybe I'll just concentrate on finishing the sets I need to complete and see if that works. I'll continue to sell the stuff I can't use anymore and let the money build until I feel that I need some new product or a set to build.

Thanks again,
Billy

Use that money to buy a couple hobby boxes. Get something that just came out or will be coming out soon. That will get you back on the wagon when you start collating to make a set.

I'm off and on every year, but I always buy a case of Heritage or Ginter to get the "set-building blood" flowing. I love the high-end singles (for my player needs), but there's nothing like completing a nice set with all the inserts.

Sometimes the hobby is labor intensive, detail oriented, costly, and distracting................That consumes time and attention away from those you care about...............It seems less like FUN and more like a JOB.................That's when I need to take a break and wait for the "itch" again...............It comes around again, would not worry about that!

It comes and goes for me. If I have not found anything exciting for a while, I get more into a funk than normal. I have been thinking more and more about what I am going to do with everything I have amassed. I keep thinking I will start to leak out parts of the collection for sale, but I really do hate the work that goes with selling!

Right now I have a small organizing bug and want to finally get all of the cards finished by player. It is a huge task, but many of the boxes I have are already sorted alphabetically. I just need to finish those that aren't and combine them all in order. Once that is done, I can slowly work on year and set order within each player. Then I'll be able to find anything in a flash...

It has seemed more like a job than a hobby. I used to enjoy looking for cards to trade or buy, but the thought of having to make runs to the post office seems more of a hassle than a anything.

I have all my trade stuff listed in alphabetical order and/order pictured in my bucket, so I can't even go that route to break up the boredom. I am heading to Vegas in a few weeks, so maybe that will be the break I need to get back into the game.

The ups and downs of the hobby.......Its like the sea......High tide or low tide....Bads times..I work on just my personal sets....and stop buying stuff......Good times..I'm into buying, trading and opening boxes! Best regards, David

Maybe concentrating on to completing all the sets I have yet to finish will ease the worries a little. One less worry, when trying to clean up loose ends with my collection.

I think that's how it is for most people, it goes in cycles. I know I "obsess" over things a little bit, for the past year and a half it's been cards and before that for a few years it was video games. It's good to take some breaks once in a while because if you trade on here enough eventually you get to the point where not many people have something you need and/or nobody needs anything you have because they've all traded with you already.

In your case I can see there being some "Chavez overload" with ChavezCollector liquidating his collection there is so much Chavez stuff available right now, you kind of get overloaded with options and end up wanting very little or nothing.

I have lost interest to the point where I've considered selling my Pujols and Ike Davis collections. As it stands right now,I'm just looking to finish the 2 sets in my sig that I'm working on and I'm not sure after that. Maybe it's because it's summer and I'd rather be out playing golf..........I don't know. The good thing about it all is that I don't have the itch to bust any boxes or packs so that saves me money lol. I guess the true answer will come when the weather changes and I won't be able to do the things I enjoy during the spring and summer months.

The Summer might have something to do with for me also. I enjoy being outside more than in and with my dog wanting to go for walks and the yard work that needs to be completed, I have have the drive for the cards anymore. I look at ebay and read the threads hear, but I tend to only find myself selling stuff to collect money for cards that I'm not buying, lol....I'm sure it will all pass.

It's thrilling for some, but how cards are produced and marketed these days has become a real downer for a lot of collectors I believe. Everything is geared towards low print runs, short prints, limited edition, etc. That used to be something "special" like Tiffany Topps set with a print run of 5000, where the regular Topps set might be produced in the millions. That WAS special, but it was also somewhat affordable and not so limited that only a handful of people could have them.

My collecting interest allows for me to chase items that are not so limited or common, but there are those items that are and I am burned out on that part of it. If I collected an active player, I probably would have stopped collecting all together of refocused on something else. I actually prefer signed vintage cards more than even my Garvey or Dodgers collections these days, because I can find "fun" buys for a few bucks or less regularly, but there are still lofty items to chase if I choose to do so. There is what seems like a never ending supply of choices and it always keeps me looking as opposed to searching hours and hours for a single item I don't already have or waiting 3-6 months between issues that contain a new card of my player, only to find out that there is a base, and 6 parallel versions each numbered to 25, 10, 5 and 1 then 4 1/1 printing plates, a 1/1 wood card, a 1/1 special autograph, a 1/1 patch card, etc for each parallel. Yes, that is a gross exaggeration, but you know what I mean.

The collecting bug does seem to come and go for me. It's my only hobby so I mostly stick with it. Getting my collection organized, figuring out what I want to collect, and streamlining what I collect really helps and keeps it fun.

I've pretty much cut down what I collect to just a player collection (Thome), team collection (Phillies), Topps sets, and smaller insert sets. Fortunately, that's quite a few cards out there that I still need. I just take it slow and easy, try to have fun with it, and don't do it every single day. It is a fun hobby.:)
