i always enjoy seeing who other people collect because lets face it we all like to talk about our collections and show them off and rightfully so with all the nice collections on here. my question is who do you collect and how do you go about it

me i collect ernie banks. I only collect vintage, gu and auto cards. for some reason anything else simple doesnt feel like a real ernie banks card to me. So i only like stuff connected to when he played or signed by him. ive thought about collecting newer base and inserts but i didnt want to pick up cards like that just to have quantity i would rather have the quality. thats no knock on any other ernie banks collectors on here thats just the way i collect him.

I collect a good amount of guys, but my main PC is Miguel Cabrera. I try and grab anything and everything whether it's cards, bobbleheads, magazines, etc. Not sure why, I just find the oddball stuff interesting.

Corey Patterson:

Rookie cards (Primarily 1999 Topps Traded);
GU (Jersey, bat);
Autos.

Serial numbered.

Base singles.

I collect all David Wrights cards. From base to autos. Have a few non card items as far as 500th RBI ticket stub, his 30/30 ticket stub, jerseys, bobbleheads, and mcfarlane figures. I usually bust boxes to try for the base and ofcourse I am hopeful for the inserts. I then take what I have if it's base I try to trade for Wrights I need. If I have a real nice pull I'll first try to sell or trade it here for a real nice Wright if I can't find anything here it then goes on ebay and I then take the paypal and buy a nice Wright on ebay. But I only buy if the price is right...for example I paid $40 for the 09 Finest Red Refractor auto 5/25 (his jersey #) which I consider to be a steal. Being that Wright has over 4000 cards it makes it very hard to become a super collector because his cards can get pricey depending on supply and demand of the sets. To date Wright has 1,427 1/1 cards. :(

1400 1/1s? that seems a little ridiculous from the card companies to be doing that.

I have the same issue with Cabrera. He nearly has 6686 cards and about 1800 are 1/1s. Then on top of that about 2500 are game used or autos.

it's unreal I tell you between 07 and 08 Moments and Milestones alone in 07 he had a card for 30 hrs...thats 30 1/1s. He also had a card for RBI and he had 107...that's 137 1/1s. The next card in this set was his doubles at 42 which makes 179 1/1s. Finally the last card in the 07 M&M set is his stolen bases which was 34...that makes 213 1/1s just in the 07 M&M set...on to 08. Home runs 33 now thats 246 1/1s. 08 he had 15 sbs that makes 261 total 1/1s between both sets. Then there's the cards that are numbered in these sets /10 /25 /150...:mad: as you can tell these sets are a thorn in most player collector's sides.

Same here. For Cabrera:

2007: 33 HRs, 116 RBI
2008: 116 RBI (SAME EXACT YEAR AS 07 M&M!!), 195 H, 50 2B

So that's 510 total 1/1s and when you add in the parallels, it's about 1800 of his cards (if there was a blue /10 parallel in 07, then it would be about 2000). The thing that drives me nuts is that the 07 M&M RBI and the 08 M&M RBI are from the same YEAR (05).

You know what, now that you mention it and I looked at my haves list, I was wrong...they did use the 07 hrs in the 08 set...:confused:

thats one of the biggest reasons i dont even bother seeing how many cards ernie banks has. i am a specialist as i like to call it(since i dont collect all cards just gu autos and vintage) but i also dont want to get discouraged by how many are out there.

I just started collecting Scott Rolen, he is approaching 6,000 total cards but honestly I dont see him having another 100 issues in 2010. As he's already been left out of sets like Allen & Ginter and National Chicle. Honestly I just want to reach a point where I feel its a respectful collection, roughly 40-50% of his beckett reconized issuses. As well as odd ball stuff such as bobble heads, figurines and other misc. items. I also hope to add some true game used stuff and a IP or a respected COA ball. I also want to thank everyone here who's already helped in this collection I just passed the 300 diffrent card mark which I dont think is bad seeing how I started with 5 cards, and havent bought a single item and this collection is only 15 days old. THANKS GUYS!!!!

Now with that said, Ive decided to start a old timer player collection. Im leaning hard towards Joe Nuxhall. As well as a theme collection leaning towards World Series MVP rookie cards. And Im thinking about as a way to show off my support of the Reds. Instead of collecting team sets. Look for either RC, 1st year in the team uniforms or 2nd year cards on players who have RC's with other players of all the members of the Reds team HOF.

As for how I go about it, right now Im pretty much restricted to trading online. As Im on a very limited budget. I do plan on going full tilt once we get some things worked out. But as a way to try to further my collection and still enjoy busting wax Im only buying products that Rolen resides in.

Also, I feel I should say Im currently scouting the games I get to watch in a attempt to find someone to add to my player collection as Rolen is 35 and if he stays healthy I dont see him playing past 40. So I want to have a head start and ready to roll with it. I had thought about Drew Stubbs, but am reconsidering it fast. His K totals and lack to bunting ability worries me. I know he's young but still to each his own. So Im looking for someone who plays the game right, in my eyes. And I want someone with 5-10 or less years in the show.

i wouldnt mind getting some banks game used items but im guessing game used bats and jerseys of ernie banks would come at a high price.

i have a nice rolen sweet spot auto, pm me if you have any interest and ill get you a scan.

I collect Frank Thomas and Andres Galarraga primarily, thinking about Brian McCann. I collect anything of Thomas, base, inserts, autos, GU, but I must say there is something much more gratifying to find a rare 90s insert than adding 50 gu to my collection. To me, once you have one jersey, bat, or pants card, is it really that much different than the next? Patches are the exception to the rule, but are usually out of my price range. :p Galarraga can be difficult to collect b/c I just don't find a lot of this stuff. I find it hard to pay $4 DLVD on ebay for a $2 card. I actually starting collecting him when he joined the Braves. I took a look through my boxes and realized I had about 50 or so already and went for it.

Mets in general and Joey Devine mainly. Although I also collect any former NC State players to a lesser extent.

For Devine I go after just about anything I can get. Base, inserts, autos, GUs, etc etc.
For the Mets players I go after a few players in particular (Reyes, Wright...just my favorite players) and collect mainly GUs and Autos, but Autos are a little tougher just because guys like Reyes and Wright are so expensive.

I totally agree - something special about finding a rare 90's insert. In a way I am lucky that Rusty's career was cut short by injuries. Otherwise I would be insane. He only has something like three GU cards. Perfect.

I almost said that it would be more fun for someone just starting a player collection to pick a player that was done by 2000ish. But then there's also something cool about picking a player who's got the post-hype blues, racking up sweet cards for dirt cheap, and then watching him (hopefully) succeed or go on to have a long career.

How do I collect - I mostly buy. I check Ebay every day and other sites from time to time. It's hard to find the rarer issues in trade. With that being said I found my white whale as soon as I returned to the hobby. I searched different trading forums and saw where someone said, "don't make me break out my Rusty Greer Red Crusade." Later that week we had come to an arrangement :D So I'm also trying to network on the forums. My screen name was strategically chosen to give me the best shot. Now on to the Totally Certified Gold...

I keep track of what cards I have and what cards I need on Beckett. Their site may suck, but it helps me keep track. I most enjoy flipping through my collection in an album. If there were in boxes I would not get to enjoy them nearly as often. And ya gotta love those rainbows in a 9-slot page.

Now to the Ernie Banks guy... since I have returned to the hobby there are other players I've wanted to collect, but I'm picky. I just want cards that look cool or with them in a specific uniform - just as I remember them.

A great thread - there are many ways to collect!

that comment made me laugh. i understand what you mean about it, your lucky there is not more cards made but i had to laugh when you said your lucky his career was cut short by injuries because id have to guess that he doesnt feel the same way lol.

RGF-I have a nice little Ron Gant collection he to only has 3 GU cards, and I ended up with a ton of them. He also has very few I think 2 AU cards I have 1 of those. Now I have all my Gants in a box as I have sent that collection to the DFA list. Just something I dont feel like tackling right now. But I think its important to mention not just the rare inserts but the issues like Desert Storm and Topps Tiffany, the Tiffanys can be easy to find on some players but was a chore for Gant. Plus even with todays stars the grandstand sets are always fun to locate.
