That is stunning. Today's pitchers are babied and yet they still get hurt at a high rate. And to think we are not that far removed from the workhorse pitchers........Clemens, Johnson, Maddux etc etc.

I just looked this up very quickly so I may have missed someone but Robin Roberts looks to have the most complete games in a season in the modern era with 33 in 1953. And looky here.........he was still throwing complete games 7 years later which is shown on the card you just posted.

As a point of reference Bert Blyleven in 1973 started 40 Games, and recorded 25 Complete Games. His highest career total. 9 of those CG's were shutouts. His second highest total came in 1985 between the Indians and Twins when he started 37 and completed 24. Only 5 of those were shutouts. His two highest totals were 12 years apart.

Also in decline due to fewer complete games, Innings pitched are also on the decline. 7 teams have not had a pitcher throw 300 innings in a year. The last one to do it was Steve Carlton for the Phillies in 1980. The team who has had the longest drought is the Reds, with Bucky Walters in 1941. 6 teams had their last 300 inning pitcher in 1974. Ryan, Jenkins, Perry, Hunter, Tiant, and Mickey Lolich. Jenkins, Perry, and Hunter were the last for 2 different teams.
My favorite stat line of these 30, is Phil Niekro in 1979 for the Braves

Sparky Anderson as a manager in the 1970 Topps set........His '59 card doesn't count since he didn't go in as a player......

Between this and the Jack Morris 1978 RC you are like the baseball encyclapedia!

I totally forgot Gary Carter and did not know Sutter had died. It seems Gary Carter is one of the few Mets on those great teams of the late 80s that did not live the reckless life style and yet he is the one who fell ill and passed away early. Funny how life worlsa
