Nice card! Unfortunately he died in a car accident about 25 minutes South of me. Not sure exactly where this occured as it appears to have happened on a side road, to a side road to another side road. It shows he died in Johnson City, NY (a suburb of Binghamton) but that is the location of Wilson hospital where he either ultimately passed away or was declared deseased.
LMAO! Who would think a tame guy like Billy Martin would ever do sonething like that?
Billy Martin was the type of leader that would almost immediately turn teams around (Twins, Tigers, Yanlees) before wearing out his welcome and moving on. Jim Harbaugh is like that just not as volilte but definately odder/quirkier than Martin.
Speaking of 1972 and Billy Martin the following clip is what I remember about him as I was a big Tiger fan and was watching this game when it happened. Ask any old Tiger fan who the pitcher was and we all know it was 6'7" Lerrin LaGrow.
And funnier yt is Martin told LaGrow to throw at Campy's ankle.
Nine years later, Martin admitted, “I told [LaGrow] to throw at his ankle. There’s nothing illegal in baseball about that. We weren’t throwing at his head. They used to throw at Mickey Mantle’s legs all the time.

Scobes coming through with some vintage hockey this week! I love the old hockey cards since you just don't see them anywhere near as much as the other three major sports. I was never a hockey fan in the traditional sense of the term but I still know the "hockey basics" from back in the 70s Today, I'd be lucky to name 5 current NHL players. Really, really lucky as a matter of fact.
I meant to reply about the 1987 Topps Football Leslie O'Neal RC you posted but did not have time. Why do so many collectors consider late 80s football to be "junk era"? Those cards are not rare but also not a dime a dozen. To me football's junk era was from 1989 to 1993 with some very notable exceptions like 1989 Score. Hockey's junk era was pretty much from 1990-91 thru 1992-93 IMO. You rarely see even very late 80s hockey cards but yet so many "expert" collectors hold these cards in total contempt.
Better stop my rant now before people begin thinking TC84 has taken over my account! LMAO
Scobes!! Thanks for the 1952 Topps Mantle I just got in the mail this morning. OK, it was not a 52 Topps Mantle but a 1993 Leaf Heading to the Hall Ozzie Smith which I had just as much trouble finding as the Mantle. 1 set down and a couple of hundred more to go!

Hockey was my second sports love (after Baseball) as I started getting interested in the sport, cards, and video games in the early 1990s. It is definitely harder to find older Hockey cards than the other sports.
Your junk wax eras are pretty spot on. I think for Baseball it starts earlier - usually 1987 to 1994. You're right that most late-80s (maybe even back to mid-80s) cards are not held in high regard. I think the idea of the Baseball Junk Wax era permeates into the other sports.
I'm glad the **ahem** Mantle **ahem** arrived. Always good doing trades with you!
