That is a heck of a collection project especially for someone called Metsman! Very nice!!
Thanks bro….It’s because of George Foster I became a Mets fan….He didn’t really do well in NY but I got tired of the Reds front office spitting in the faces of players like Perez, Morgan, Rose; Perez especially….I also have TTM auto’s of Norman, McEnaney, Rettenmund, Billingham, and a few others……

I never knew Mayo Smith managed the Phillies in the '50s until last night when my friend from college and I were talking about what happened with him with the TIgers. He managed them to the '68 World Series win and seemingly disappeared a couple of years later. My friend looked some stuff up on him and much to my surprise he managed the Phils previous to his tenure with Detroit. And less than 24 hours later, he appears on this card as "Mgr. Smith!!

A very early AFL card! Nice! Hard to believe there were two professional football teams in Dallas in the early 60s before the Texans moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs. THere were the Texans of the AFL and....ummm.....I can't remember the NFL team's name but I think they are now a minor league team.

I see this guy went to college at SMU. So many players back then were drafted and/or signed by the regional pro teams in both leagues. As worldwide as pro football is today (unfortunately), pro football had a strong regional tendency due to the tremendous populrity of college football compared to the less popular professional leagues.

If someone can name the other pro football team in Dallas in the early 60s, I'd appreciate it because I think they have disappeared into the dust bin of history.

I think I know the team you're talking about but can't for the life of me remember their name... they were put together like scraps of wood you'd use to put a pinewood derby car together with. Eventually they became a pretty good team though, if I say so myself... :cool:

The problem with that team, and the reason you can't remember their name, is their owner does no publicity for himself. Also, they have had back to back under-performing quarterbacks for the last 20 years, who nobody really likes.

Believe it or not, I only officially learned how to pronounce Bob Veale's last name a few months ago. This year my small town had a confessed murderer with the same last name who the media consistantly pronounced as Vee-lay. That got me wondering if I had been mispronouncing his name incorrectly for decades. After a little research, I discovered I was pronouncing his name correctly all the time which was Veal.

Only I could learn of a horrific local murder and immediately start thinking about an old time baseball player. I guess that is how my mind works because I am so enamored with vintage sports cards! I probably should get that condition checked out by a medical professional!

@SymphonicMetal

Yeah, I would have thought it was Veal, not Vee-lay!

Scobes

Bonus: Here is the TTM Auto that I received from him back in 2020!
