Numbers taken: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26, 29, 31, 32, 34, 37, 39, 40, 44, 46, 50, 51, 56, 61, 66, 72, 76, 77, 82, 84, 85, 89, 90, 95, 100.

I'm going with 42 Sid Luckman's uniform number probably one of the most under-rated QB's in the history of the NFL

Numbers taken: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26, 29, 31, 32, 34, 37, 39, 40, 42, 44, 46, 50, 51, 56, 61, 66, 72, 76, 77, 82, 84, 85, 89, 90, 95, 100.

WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree, he was a legend, and not appreciated in his time or since. Probably equivalent to Stan Musial in baseball, a great player everyone knew, but was not remembered in the same breath as Mantle, Williams, etc.

Sid also played on the teams of the 40s with Johnny Lujack, who is a favorite of mine as well, they had a strong lineup in those days!

God Bless,

Kevin

I'll take 81 today for former Bears HOFer Doug Atkins. How many guys were his height (6'8")playing in the 1950s and 1960s? Fellow HOFer Bob St Clair was 6'9" but I can't name anyone else that was that height in the NFL back then.

I found this clip of Mike Singletary telling some funny stories about the 1985 Bears. And the strangest guy on that team was NOT Jim McMahon.

For as nice a guy as Singletary is he was also a very tough, no nonsense coach. He certainly had Ray Lewis's utmost respect and totally turned around Vernon Davis's career when he sent him to the locker room and humiliated him with that famous tirade at the press conference after the game. It says a lot about Davis that he realized Singletary was right and he gives him credit for turning his career around.

Dick Butckus was #51, you know your Hall of Fame linebackers, Katester!!

The choice today will be #8.

51 was for Butkus no doubt - not sure I know too many HOF LB's after that. Haven't groomed a whole lot of them in Philly...at least not since Chuck Bednarik.

McMahon was my favorite on that Bears team. And while not a Bear, along the same line of crazy, loved The Boz at OU. Perfect role models for an idiot 17 year old kid.

LOVING THIS THREAD! Thanks everyone, I will post the winner tomorrow night at 8 PM CST. (The kickoff in 1986 was at 4 pm, but that is on my drive home!!)

Not sure if you have Netflix, or have seen this program, but ESPN 30 for 30 has a "Brian and the Boz" program, which I have watched twice, I liked it so much! There was a SI cover with Brian and McMahon on the cover as well, both being outrageous, attention grabbing figures!

NEAT video, Jeff, thanks for sharing, I am enjoying listening to Mike's testimony, as well as his great stories about the Bears too! Mike is an inspirational leader, and I really wanted to see him coach the Niners for longer.

As far as Doug Atkins, I didnt remember that he was that tall, though I dont think most NBA players were that tall back in the 60s!

The thing that amazed me about Doug Atkins is that he played for 17 seasons in the NFL..........as a defensive end no less!! And in probably the most dangerous era to play in because the only rule seemed to be.......THERE ARE NO RULES! Man oh man, you had to be one tough cat to play that long in that era at that position. At 6'8" tall you know everyone was blocking him low at the knees yet he somehow survived for 17 seasons. Amazing.

I was going to guess 17 in homor of 17 seasons for him but that # was taken. so I'll go with 68 to represent his height of 6'8".

Kevin I would also have liked to see Singletary coach the 49ers longer. I always thought he had a bad rap as being too "out there " for today's players. The following two players would beg to differ on that take. I think you'll like these 2 videos.

First Ray Lewis. The story told by Singletary starting at 2:25 cracked me up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sHMFQIa_DA

And Vernon tells how Singletary turned him around.

I don't think too much scares Mike Singletary if he is not afraid to lay down the law to Ray Lewis and Vernon Davis (who might even be more imposing than Ray Lewis). I'm not sure why they have Davis as a linebacker in that video when he is a tight end.

Those are fantastic, Jeff, its neat how much there is out there about Singletary, he is a true Hall of Fame caliber player, and hopefully he will get some coaching experience, and get another head coach nod. Would be neat to see him win another Super Bowl as head coach!

Thanks for posting, this has been a great contest!
