Right? This was the same place that held the 84 Fleer Update Puckett for me so, there's a chance. As I was getting ready to leave I saw a 81 Topps Joe Montana rookie graded 6, so I was telling the guy about receiving a box of 81 football for my birthday that year, but at the time (Nov 81) I didn't know about Joe, but having just moved from Montana the previous year would have been cool to get. Got skunked on Montana but seemed like there was a Walter Payton in every other pack.

You might have been the only person that didn't get a Montana RC... the "haves" for that card on Beckett's trading/selling site is more than a thousand... Walter Payton is around 350 for each of his Topps cards that year. Most other cards are around 200-250. The Walter Payton RC only has around 350 "haves". I don't know why I think this is important or why I even looked it up, but maybe the BV on the Payton RC should be higher than $600... if less than half the amount of people report having one than the Montana then it should be more than double the amount of Montana's RC, which is at $300 right now... right?

The other guys I was chasing were the rcs of Kellen Winslow, Mark Gastineau. and Art Monk who was a Syracuse University product and I was from upstate NY. Consider how 1981 Topps football is viewed now vs back in 1981 and it just shows how drastically things can change.

The other drastic change is how football cards are viewed by collectors. In 1981 they were just garbage and stayed that way until the late 1980s. I was the only moron on the planet who was buying them it seemed. They were such garbage that I slowly tapered off my buying of them in 1986 and almost completely stopped in 1987 and 1988. As a matter of fact I don't think I bought a single pack of 1988 Topps football and in an odd way I still consider them "rare" because of that. LOL Then 1989 hit and football cards exploded and the rest is history.

For sure! If it's still there next time u go maybe try haggling a little and see if they would come down on price. Couldn't hurt.
I'm thinking about sending in the 3 autos I was given to be authenticated. They look legit, but you never can be too sure. I have several IP autos I've gotten myself, those don't need authentication... getting 3 sent to me, of those players, kinda makes me go hmmm...

Several years ago I read an article about Tony Romo in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and one the key things in the article was a story about a time in high school when he missed the bus to a game and he ended up riding his bike to the town the game was in. Burlington to East Troy, (about an hour and a half bike ride) can't remember if it was football or basketball but when I worked in Burlington at Kmart and Wal-Mart of course had the plethora of Packers jerseys, but always a rack full of Romo jerseys as well. Cool that he still comes back to do his football camp every year too

It's weird to me with football, how much they sat around. My brother and I collected both pretty heavily until 1986, and then we decided he would get the football and hockey, and I would get the baseball, with any doubles of those going to the other. This ended pretty quick as he basically stopped collecting in 1986. But I loved the 82,83, and 85 Topps sets for football. Basketball cards were not in our area until fleer in 86 because the Lakers were gone and the Wolves would not be around for 3 more years.

LMAO!!! I had no idea he played for Atlanta. Where did you get that stamp anyways? I have tons of those 1972 Sunoco stamps and never noticed him but I am much too mature to delve into Junior High humor to notice him.

I put his name in a search and I ended up in some very unusual websites. Remind me not to do that again. I never knew people could do such things!!

Anyways he had 5 total cards in his 11 year NFL career and one spelled his last name incorrectly on the back and another one pictured him in a Brown's uniform when playing for the Steelers despite him having not played for Cleveland for two years. And yet another set he appeared in was the 1968 KDKA Steelers set which like the Carrolton Park Mall Cowboys set was something I always wanted to order from the back of The Sporting News but never did. ; That falls under the category of Non Buyers Remorse.

Speaking of Junior High Humor, if this does not bring back Metsman1986 (he of the Beavis and Butt-head style humor) then nothing will. Many Benchies miss his immaturity but I am not one of them.

Ya, for all the Romo haters that said he was a sub-par QB, injury prone waste of time... He holds Cowboys QB records for Career Passing yards (34,183), TD passes (248), most 300 yard passing games, Cowboys leader in Passer Rating, 3rd behing Staubach and Aikman for QB wins, most 4th Quarter comebacks... and a few more less significant accolades. I liked Romo. His spin move to avoid a sack should have been trademaked. Broken collar bone (twice) still tried to play. Made Witten a first ballot HOFer, and had fun while doing it! Eventually his back injuries caught up to him and he was replaced by another QB that just couldn't, and I don't think will, get The Cowboys past the first round of the playoffs.
He will always be rememberd by me as a football ecyclopedia. A guy that never bad mouthed another teammate. And someone who truly loved playing for the Cowboys. Forget the muffed field goal hold... forget the int's... he was a Cowboys Quarterback. I'd put him behind 1. Staubach 2. Aikman 3. Meredith. So ya, #4 best Cowboys QB. That's good enough in my book to get him in The Ring of Honor. Witten will be there, Tyron Smith will be there, Zack Martin will DEFINITELY be there as will DeMarcus Ware. Romo HAS to be in with that bunch....

I cannot believe that I lived for about a year in his hometown of Lebanon, Pa!!! I just saw that on his Wiki page. I just loved that town too and hated to have to leave it. I knew Sam Bowie went to high school there and he is most remembered for being drafted just ahead of Michael Jordan. I had no idea I had such a close brush with fame................or infamy. LMAO!!

Novelty is right! While I was scrolling the 81 Topps set yesterday I noticed a guy named Richard Wood. He played for The Bucs as a linebacker and it was his RC... might have to see if he has any cards with the name D**k Wood in place of Richard.
Too bad Lebanon isn't nearly the sports town that Grand Prairie is... lol Your town got schlubs like DICK SHINER and Sam Bowie... GP had Charley Taylor and Kerry Wood. Also, I graduated HS with Remi Ayodele. Partied a few times with him. He's best known for being one of the players implicated in Bountygate when he played for The Saints and was given incentive to hurt Favre in that playoff game in '09. And from what I saw, he might have gotten a few bucks for a few dirty plays. He played for The Cowboys too, but that's because his brother played there at the time and was somewhat productive. Remi got a SB Ring, though, with the Saints as the starting nose tackle. He was the stereotypical big man on campus. Everyone wanted to be friends with the punk... ya, Remi, you were always a punk! I went to a party my Senior year with my gf that was an absolute knockout. I mean a 10 in every category! We walk in the house and Remi and his weasel crew were on the stairs. He said, "Hey Terrell, when u breakin up with Tiffany? I want to tap that before I leave." I said " Thats NEVER gunna happen, Remi, I'll make sure of it." Man, I really did not like that guy!!!
Aaaand... Rant #2 is complete!! Hahaha!!! Gimme another topic I can go off on. How's bout how college athletes can now be paid based on performance, and how that constitutes professional status therefore they shouldn't be allowed to participate in NCAA events because pro athletes are prohibited....

It may not look like much... but this card eluded me for a year. It was just not available! I couldn't find one anywhere... I started to question whether it even existed for a while. It finally popped up a few weeks ago in an auction. Even at only $4 BV, I was prepared to go all in at $20, because I just didn't know if I would ever see it again. It was the only card from the set I needed to complete the 15 card team set from the main set. I saw it early and put a bid in, so I had to wait 7 days to see what happened... and nothing did happen! Won the auction at $2.50 with one person bidding early as well. I was shocked!

In the mid/late 80s through early 90s my brother and I used to set up at Cooperstown during induction weekend. The year Slaughter was inducted we sold some of his cards to his daughter. I had to look up the year he went in and it was 1985 and sure enough he had 4 daughters. Which one bought cards from us I have no idea but it was pretty cool.

Not as impressive of a brush with greatness as me living in Dick Shiner's hometown for a short time but pretty cool nonetheless.
