MARVELOUS MARV!!!!
With the expansion Mets in 1962 as the starting first baseman he had 10 home runs and 17 errors! Not an easy feat in any era.
LMAO! 43 for 1!!! i have not seen that ad in decades! And he was the Miller Lite spokesman too!

I did not know this factoid until just now. When I saw Marv Throneberry was with the Kansas City Athletics in the early 60s, I began to wonder if he was involved in the famous trade that bought Roget Maris from Kansas City to the Yankees. And 'lo and behold he was. Throneberry was traded with 3 other players to the Athletics (most notably Hank Bauer and Don larson) for Maris and 2 other players. I had no idea he was involved in that trade until today! Here's one for today!

I knew Kansas City was considered a Yankees Major League Farm Team but had no idea as to why. I just thought it was bad management but it obviously was more than that.@SymphonicMetal
Interesting. I didn't know that either. Here's the full trade:
December 11, 1959:
KCA receives: Hank Bauer, Don Larsen, Norm Siebern and Marv Throneberry.
NYY receives: Roger Maris, Joe DeMaestri and Kent Hadley
Bauer and Larsen's best days were behind them at that point. Siebern did the best of KC's return - a 3-time AS and finished in the MVP voting (14th, 7th, and 27th).
Then I looked into why KC would trade Maris in this deal and found this:
"The two franchises shared an unusually cozy relationship where Kansas City essentially operated as a "major league farm team" for the Yankees. At the time, Athletics owner Arnold Johnson had close personal financial and real estate ties to Yankees co-owner Del Webb. Because Johnson owed Webb favors and money, the Yankees were frequently allowed to treat Kansas City's roster as a talent pipeline. Whenever New York needed to fill a hole, they would trade away their aging or underperforming veterans to Kansas City in exchange for top-tier young talent."
Evidently, the Yanks picked up quite a few solid pieces from KC in a similar manner - players such as Clete Boyer, Ralph Terry, Enos Slaughter, Johnny Sain, and Ryne Duren.
I don't think anything like this would fly in today's MLB.

Once again Scobes posts a card that compels me to look the player pictured up. For 60 years I've known who Pete Retzlaff was (Eagles receiver) because of his mid 60s cards but did not know much about him. Looking at his stats, I'm surprised he is not in the Pro Football HOF. 2 times first team all pro, 2 times second team, NFL title in 1960, led the league in receptions in 1958, loooong 14 year career where he was productive right until the end (1st Team All Pro in his next to last year!). And yet he is just forgotten in the pro football dustbin of history. Sad.Here's one for today!

Speaking of the Philadelphia Eagles and 1962 one of my most prized (which differs from valuable) is a 3 panel fold out of the Philadelphia Eagles 1962 schedule. It has info on both sides of each of the three panels and the stock would be similar to 1980s and earlier baseball cards. On the front there is a picture of Tommy McDonald on the left and another of Sonny Jurgenson on the right. When one of my more tech saavy brothers comes here I'll have him post a picture of this beauty. I'm sure I bought this for a quarter at a flea market during my 2 times as a Pa. resident in the mid 80s.
And for Scobes or any other Philadelphia person, have you ever heard of a beer called Schmidts of Philadelphia? Their slogan was "Get the friendlier feeling of full-taste beer". This com[any was the sponsor for this schedule which advertised a TV show called "Touchdown Twins" which was a 15 minute show on Saturday and Sunday nights featuring McDonald and Jurgenson.
He is a pretty big prospect and not just because of his shared ethnicity with me. He recently set a record for most pitches thrown in a game that were 100 MPH or over. Not sure if that is a record you want to have as the guy who held that record is a pitcher for the Reds who has been on the DL for the better part of a year. Someone more literate in modern baseball than I am ( pretty much everybody on The Bench)- would know the specific details.Nope, don't know anything about him... what the card is worth... got it as a freebie in a trade and thought it was cool.

He also set a record for fastest pitch by a starter ever. Dont quote me but I think it was 105.6 MPHHe is a pretty big prospect and not just because of his shared ethnicity with me. As a staff member for the Brewers I can tell you about Miz. Yes, he does hold the record for most 100 plus pitches in a game. His Maddux that he pitched a couple weeks ago against the Phillies was just amazing. He seems to be a pretty grounded kid, and has a good head on his shoulders. He is a regular at sports and pokemon shops around Milwaukee and just saw that he opened some packs with a fan in Arizona this weekend. He is a pretty big prospect and not just because of his shared ethnicity with me. the good news is he plays for Milwaukee and cards are still reasonably pricedNope, don't know anything about him... what the card is worth... got it as a freebie in a trade and thought it was cool.
